Greek Orthodox Church

The Greek Orthodox Church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary), is a significant spiritual and cultural landmark located on Conyngham Road in Parsons Hill, Gqeberha. It serves as the spiritual home for the Greek Orthodox faithful in Nelson Mandela Bay and is central to the broader Hellenic Community of Gqeberha. Beyond its primary role as a place of worship, the church is a vibrant hub for the preservation and celebration of Greek culture, traditions, and language. It hosts regular divine liturgies, religious ceremonies, and community events, fostering a strong sense of identity and fellowship among its members. The architectural beauty of the church, characteristic of Orthodox design, is also a notable feature in the Parsons Hill area.

The first Greek Orthodox service in Port Elizabeth was held at St Peter’s Church in South End on 2 July 1905, with about 70 Greeks attending the service. As from 1956, after the purchase of the Parsons Hill site, a concerted effort was made to raise funds to design and build the church, school and presbytery complex. On Sunday 17 August 1958, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated.
