The Dawn of a New Age
Offshore Windpark Baltic 1, Transformer Station.
Baltic 1 is the first commercial Offshore Windpark in Germany, 16 km in front of the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the Baltic Sea (close to the island of Rügen): 21 Wind Power Plants with a total capacity of 48,3 Megawatt. They produce about 185 million kilowatt hours of electric energy per year, enough for 50.000 households. The transformer station is 22 Meters high above the sea, it weighs 900 tons. Baltic 1 produces electric energy since 2011.
I had the opportunity to visit the construction site in 2010. I picked out some pics and re-edited them recently.

Futuristic. Fantastic. Love this surreal floating image… And your description is great. I lived in Saßnitz for a couple of years way back. Who would have thought of offshore windfarms back then?

If we take a step back and look on the past 10 years it is easy to see that we are in the middle of an energy revolution. Sometimes it is hard to see because it will take 20 to 30 years. It is fascinating for me. Ah, and thank you for your very kind comment Annette. You lived at a beautiful place. When I have been at Zingst this summer I could see the tips of the rotors at the horizon. There were many fears that tourists might be disturbed but nobody cares and if then with a positive approach.
