Guidelines | List of SAPS Priority Crimes
Please use the following suggested format for your emergency messages:
TYPE: (Security / Medical / Fire)
ADDRESS: (Street Name & House No.) – OR drop a pin
STATUS: (e.g. Suspect on site / Patient unconscious)
NEED: (e.g. Ambulance / SAPS / Armed Response)
3 Tips:
- Drop a Pin: Immediately after sending the text alert, use the WhatsApp “Location” > “Send Your Current Location” feature. This is faster than typing a long address.
- Voice Notes (The Exception): If you cannot type (e.g., you are hiding or injured), a short voice note (under 10 seconds) is acceptable, but text is always preferred for responders to read quickly.
- House Identifiers: If it’s night, mention a visual cue if possible (e.g., “White gate, porch light is flashing”).

SOS Group Guidelines: Emergency Response Protocol
Welcome to the Parsons Hill Community SOS group. This group is a dedicated channel for critical, life-threatening, or urgent security and medical emergencies. To ensure that responders can see and act on alerts without distraction, strict adherence to these rules is mandatory.
A. Core Purpose: Emergency Only
- SOS Alerts Only: This group is strictly for reporting active emergencies (e.g. medical crises, crimes in progress, fires, or immediate threats to safety).
- No General Information: Do not post service delivery issues (power/water), general security observations, or lost and found items here. Use the main community group for those updates.
B. The “Silent Protocol” (Strictly Enforced)
To keep the notification channel clear for responders, the following are strictly prohibited:
- No Chatter: Do not engage in discussion, speculation, or commentary on an active alert.
- No Replies or “Thank You’s”: While well-intentioned, “Thank you,” “Acknowledged,” or “Praying” messages create unnecessary notifications that bury the emergency details.
- No Emoticons/Reactions: Do not use emojis or the WhatsApp “react” feature on messages. Keep the interface clean for those managing the response.
- No Multimedia Spam: Do not post memes, stickers, or unrelated photos/videos.
C. Respect for Responders
- Professionalism: Always treat responders (emergency services, security personnel, and volunteers) with the utmost respect.
- Clear Information: Provide facts only—location, nature of the emergency, and contact number.
- Follow Instructions: If a responder or admin asks for silence or specific information, comply immediately. Interference with an active response may result in immediate removal from the group.
D. Legal Considerations (South African Context)
All South African laws regarding digital communication apply.
- Defamation & Privacy (POPIA): Do not post unverified accusations or the personal details of individuals without legal justification. In an SOS context, focus on the threat/need, not character descriptions of suspects unless requested by SAPS.
- No Incitement: Do not use this group to coordinate vigilantism or illegal acts.
- Misinformation: Spreading “fake” alerts or unverified panic-inducing messages is a serious offense and will lead to removal and potential legal action.
E. How to Post an SOS
When posting, use a single concise message:
- Nature of Emergency: (e.g., Medical – Heart Attack / Security – Armed Robbery)
- Location: (Street name and House Number)
- Status: (e.g., “Ambulance needed,” “Suspects still on site”)
F. Administration & Enforcement
- Zero Tolerance: Due to the critical nature of this group, the “Three Strikes” rule does not apply. Violation of the “No Chatter” or “Respect” rules may result in immediate removal to protect the integrity of the emergency channel.
- Disclaimer: Group administrators and responders are not liable for the outcome of any incident. This group serves as a communication tool to facilitate faster response.
G. POPIA Compliance
By remaining in this group, you acknowledge that your phone number and profile information are visible to other members. This information is shared solely for the purpose of community safety and emergency response. Admins will not process or share this data for any other purpose.
