GQEBERHA – Swift action by SAPS Motherwell led to the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect and the recovery of a firearm and ammunition following a house robbery in NU7, Motherwell.
On Thursday, 17 September 2026 at approximately 09:00, a 64-year-old man and his family were at their residence in Mdundu Street when they were confronted by two unknown males who allegedly entered the premises and robbed them. It is alleged that one of the suspects initially approached the gate while holding a cellphone and claimed that he had a message for the victim’s daughter. When the family member approached the gate, two other suspects allegedly emerged from the side of the house. One of them was armed with a firearm and the victims were forced into the house.
The suspects allegedly demanded the victims’ cellphones and forced them to access their banking applications. The 64-year-old man was allegedly assaulted with a firearm, sustaining an open wound above his eye. The suspects also allegedly forced the family to transfer R2 000-00 via cash send before fleeing with three cellphones.
Police responded to the scene while the suspects were still inside the house. Upon seeing the members, the suspects attempted to flee through the back of the premises and over a boundary wall. Two SAPS members pursued the suspects, resulting in the arrest of one of them. During the operation, police recovered a silver .22 revolver with three live rounds of ammunition, as well as a black gas gun and one cellphone.
The 20-year-old suspect is facing charges of house robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21 September 2026. The investigation is continuing, and police are following up on information to trace the remaining suspects.
The Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brig Abdoerahgmaan Humphries commended the members for their swift response and determination in apprehending the suspect and recovering the firearm used during the robbery.
