We had a look for Farm Murders reported by the SAPS via their media channel. Reason: If there are so many farm murders as is said on social media then surely the reports on the SAPS media channel would be through the roof!

With Trumps insistence that Farm Murders are on the rise in South Africa, leading to a White genocide I had a few hours of snooping to see if official channels had a handle on whether farm murders are a ‘thing’ or not.

As it is there are 44 media releases on the SAPS Media site mentioning the words FARM and MURDER over a 12 year period (not all are unique as some instances appear 2 or 3 times AND the Farm Murders include all races killed on farms).

Also – the official police statistics do not make a distinction between a FARM or ordinary MURDER.

NEITHER does the official SAPS media channel publish ALL instances of crime so the numbers are NOT gospel but a necessary indicator nevertheless.

Bottom Line: Official channels do make reference to “Farm Murders” BUT the reporting and statistics do NOT include a sub line item called “Farm Murders”. After all – how do we define a ‘farm murder’: As only perpetrated on white farmers/as politically motivated/as any death on  a piece of land greater than a certain size/as Malema motivated/as any death on a farm caused by a 3rd party…..?

Man appears in court as farm attack turns into murder:

FREE STATE – Brandfort farmer Carl Christian Gutter (78) appeared in the local Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 21 May 2025 for the alleged murder of Sonnyboy Segalo of Brandfort. Gutter was arrested and processed the same day by members of Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks.

On 29 August 2016, the police were summoned to what had been reported as an attack on Gutter’s farm near Brandfort. They found four suspects who had been arrested by a group of farmers and farm workers. Sonnyboy Segalo was among the four suspects accused of attempted robbery.

Segalo was found lying face-down with a bullet wound to his back. A firearm claimed to belong to the suspects was discovered three days later, not far from the scene. This firearm and another belonging to Gutter were both handed in for ballistic testing. Sonnyboy later succumbed to his injuries. His three co-accused have since been acquitted of attempted robbery.

Although no one was initially arrested for the murder of Sonnyboy Segalo, an inquest into his murder was held by the Brandfort Magistrate’s Court from July 2024. In March 2025, the court ordered that Gutter be arrested to appear in court for the murder of Sonnyboy Segalo.

Gutter was granted bail of R2 000 and the case was postponed to 29 May 2025 for transfer to the Brandfort Regional Court. Free State Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mokgadi Bokaba has commended the detectives and prosecution for refusing to give up on this case. “This is evidence that the arm of the law is indeed long. Although we may appear to have reached a dead end in the beginning, new evidence can always surface, which resuscitates the investigation. This will not bring the deceased back, but it gives the family of Sonnyboy Segalo a shot at closure and justice,” said Maj Gen Bokaba.

Verification of farm murder statistics following submission by AfriForum:

PRETORIA – The Ministry of Police acknowledges receipt of a list of farm attacks submitted by AfriForum in response to the Minister’s call for evidence supporting their claim that the official crime statistics released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) underreported the number of farm murders, particularly those involving farm owners.

The SAPS Crime Registrar has begun verifying the cases contained in AfriForum’s submission. Preliminary findings indicate that, of the incidents listed, only one murder of a farm owner is reflected. This corresponds with the single farm owner murder reported in the official crime statistics for the third quarter. While verification processes are still ongoing, no additional murders of farm owners have been identified beyond what was originally reported by SAPS. Further updates will be provided once the full verification process is completed.

The SAPS remains committed to transparency and accuracy in crime reporting and urges all stakeholders, including civil society organisations, to work collaboratively in ensuring that crime statistics are based on verifiable facts. Law enforcement agencies continue to address crimes affecting all communities, including those in rural and farming areas, with the seriousness they deserve.

The Ministry further reaffirms its commitment to combating violent crime and improving safety for all South Africans. The SAPS will continue to engage with all interested parties to enhance crime prevention efforts and ensure that statistical reporting remains reliable and credible.

Two males expected to appear before court for Parys farm murder

PARYS – Two african males aged 22 and 29 are expected to appear before the Parys Magistrate Court today facing charges of murder, house robbery, theft of motor vehicle, and theft out of motor vehicle.

It is alleged that on Friday, 10 January 2025, at about 00:10 at Morelig Farm, Parys, the couple was sleeping when they were overpowered by two unknown males. During the attack, the 58-year-old male and his 61-year-old partner were assaulted, and later Mr. Themba Motha succumbed to his injuries.

The two suspects robbed and took the Mahindra bakkie and other items estimated to the value of R65 000 and fled the scene. Later on the same day, the stolen vehicle was found abandoned in Tumahole with no lead.

Through investigation, the police managed to apprehend the two suspects on Sunday, 12 January 2025.

Accused gets seven life sentences for Kestell farm murders

BETHLEHEM – The Free State High Court handed down seven life sentences plus 35 years’ to the accused person, Kamohelo Motankisi (35), of Tlholong near Kestell for the heinous crimes of killing seven people at Lismore Farm district Kestell during July 2022.

On 24 October 2024 on the matter that was heard at Bethlehem Magistrate Court, Judge Celest Reinders, Prosecutor Antonnette Ferreira and Detective Captain Alfons Kokonyana of the Provincial Murder and Robbery, Phuthaditjhaba Unit successfully convicted Kamohelo Motankisi through the assistance of internal units such as Bethlehem Crime Intelligence and K9 Unit who cracked the case by effecting arrests of both accused on 15 July 2022. The two placed their photos on social media in possession of a firearm stolen on the farm after the commission of the horrific crime. They further went to another farm where they broke entry and stole some items.

One of the two accused, Tseko Lerato Selepe, was sentenced to effective 30 years of direct imprisonment on 13 March 2024 by the same court.

The victims were six women and one male: Paulinah Mothoduwa Moloi (37), Nontwasefani Loti Smith (54), Nokufa Portia Mofokeng (31), Lerato Julie Moloi (34), Nomasonto Christinah Zulu (57), Nomasonto Maduna (44), and Rhudie Binta (18). Some of the above sustained multiple stab and gunshot wounds. Two women were sexually assaulted during the commission of the senseless killings.

The judge thanked all the role players from police ballistics and 19 witnesses, including the police who were directly and indirectly involved in the case.

The accused faced 12 charges: housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery under aggravating circumstances, seven life sentences, two sexual offenses, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and housebreaking with intent to steal and theft.

“I would like to thank the entire investigation team, especially Detective Captain Alfons Kokonyana, whose tireless efforts have been instrumental in bringing justice to the victims and their families.,” said the Provincial Commissioner of the police in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.

Finally, the accused, Kamohelo Motankisi, took a stand and apologised before the court to all members of the families he wronged after his sentence.

Armand Opperman sentenced to 27 years for farm murder

ROUXVILLE – Armand Opperman (39) was sentenced by the Rouxville Magistrate Court on the murder and robbery of 62-year-old Mr Lance Arthur Da Silva.

Mr Lance Arthur Da Silva (62) was found with a gunshot wound to the left temple in the main bedroom on the farm Windpoort, Rouxville District on Thursday, 4 May 2023 at about 14:30.

Armand Opperman, who was allegedly living with the deceased on the farm, went on the run and was arrested in Gqeberha the following day. He abandoned his bail application on Monday, 29 May 2023, in the Rouxville Magistrate’s Court and remained in custody.

The case was handed over to the a team of detectives from Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes, Murder and Robbery. Working together with the NPA Prosecutor, Armand Opperman was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for culpable homicide and 14 years’ direct imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, 3 years for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police note with concern the distribution of a pamphlet regarding alleged farm murders march

POTCHEFSTROOM – The South African Police Service (SAPS) management in the province noted with concern a pamphlet doing the rounds on social media platforms titled “Optog Teen Plaasmoorde.” The distributor of the pamphlet is apparently organising a march scheduled for Monday, 10 October 2023, in Brits.

The Provincial Chairperson of the Rural Safety Priority Committee, Major General Patrick Asaneng, would like to inform the general public and farmers in the area that the province has a PRIORITY COMMITTEE which, in line with the National Rural Safety Strategy ensures an effective and sustainable approach, thereby ensuring optimal service delivery to rural communities including on farms and smallholdings.

The march organiser is neither known nor plays any active role in ensuring the safety of the farming communities and at the same time, misleads the public and creates a perception that nothing is being done about crime in rural areas. In fact, the District Commissioner of Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 1 and the Station Commander of Brits have a good working relationship with farmers, farm workers, Community Police Forum (CPF) and other stakeholders.

While volunteers and partners are welcomed in the fight against crime, it is imperative that those who do that, work together with the police through recognised structures such as the CPF to address safety and security on farms. Everyone has the right in terms of the Constitution, to peacefully demonstrate, assemble, and picket and to present petitions, but that must be done in a responsible manner.

Man wanted for questioning in Cradock farm murder

ZWELITSHA – Cradock SAPS is appealing to members of the community to assist with the whereabouts of a man who is wanted for questioning in a murder case, which occurred at a farm on Wednesday, 30 August 2023 in Cradock.

Police are looking for Andrew Kroukamp (28), as it is believed he can assist police in solving the murder case of Matthys Van Niekerk (65), whose body was found with stab wounds at a farm near route R390 outside Cradock.

Police probe Cradock farm murder

ZWELITSHA – Police are investigating a case of murder after the body of a 65-year-old man was found yesterday in the farm house that is situated near R390 between Hofmeyr and Cradock.

On Wednesday, 30 August 2023 around 09:30, police were summoned to a scene of murder at a farm outside Cradock. At the scene, the body of a 65-year-old elderly man was found with stabbed wounds in the upper body. The deceased person is known, but his identity is being withheld until a formal identification process is concluded.

Moments later, the victim’s vehicle was found abandoned in Conway Road, Hofmeyr. The circumstances surrounding the incident are forming part of the investigation.

Police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect/s to contact a leader of the investigating team on 082 319 8876. The information may also be shared via Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Two men taken into custody over stolen property linked to Saasveld Farm murder and robbery

WESTERN CAPE – Meticulous investigative work by dedicated detectives attached to the George SAPS’s Serious and Violent Crime Investigations proved to be successful with the arrest of two men, both aged 42 yesterday afternoon (Monday, 03 July 2023) after they were found in possession of stolen property linked to a murder and robbery on Sunday evening on a farm in Saasveld near George. The attack claimed the life of a 37-year-old man.

Yesterday detectives arrested the duo in Parkdene after they followed up on information and through intelligence, traced the stolen cellphones to a shop near Parkdene in George. They seized the two stolen cellphones and a laptop that were positively linked to the incident.

Preliminary investigation suggests that two unknown men, one armed with a firearm and a knife, wearing balaclavas gained entrance to the residence and accosted a female victim in her thirties in her room. They also went and ransacked the room of the victim’s parents, a couple aged 72 and 61. Meanwhile, the elderly couple’s son in law entered the room and a scuffle ensued with the armed suspect which left him with a fatal gunshot wound.

The suspects fled the scene with a black Lenovo laptop, a maroon bag and two cellphones belonging to the victims.

The same cellphones and laptop stolen during the attack were traced and recovered. The two suspects faces charges related to the possession of presumably stolen property and will appear in the George Magistrates’ court once charged. Investigation into the murder and the whereabouts of the assailants continue.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile who has condemned the attack in the strongest way possible, has praised the investigation team for the meticulous investigative work which led to the apprehension of the two suspects. He furthermore urged the team to go the extra mile and apprehend the culprits responsible for the murder.

Three to appear in court for farm murder in Zamdela

ZAMDELA – Three men were arrested after a sheep herder was killed at a farm and 98 sheep were stolen.

On Saturday, 27 May 2023 at about 08:00 Zamdela police received information about a murder at a farm near Amelia in Zamdela. On arrival, police found a 33-year-old sheep herder with both his hands tied with a rope and a gunshot wound in the stomach. He was identified as Mr Hlompo Patrick Phale (33). Police also discovered that about 98 sheep were stolen from the farm.

Zamdela police opened a case of murder and stock theft and investigations were launched. The Provincial Organized Crime Unit took over the investigation and in less than 48 hours, through intelligence-led information, three suspects aged between 33 and 41 were arrested in Randfontein, Gauteng. They recovered 18 of the stolen sheep.

More arrests are expected. The suspects will appear in the Sasolburg Magistrate Court on Thursday, 01 June 2023 for murder and stock theft.

Farm murder suspect to apply for bail after he was linked through DNA in Odendaalsrus

ODENDAALSRUS – Two years after a farmer and one of the attackers were killed during a farm attack, a suspect could be linked to the attack through DNA evidence.

Mr Mark Regal (50) was reportedly shot dead on his father’s farm, when two assailants struck on 11 November 2020. One of the attackers was shot and died at the scene. A case of murder was registered for further investigation and taken over by Lieutenant Colonel James Mahlatsi of the Provincial Organized Crime.

After a tireless investigation into the murder, the suspect could be identified and linked to the crime scene through DNA.

A 45-year-old suspect was traced, and it was found that he was still an awaiting trial prisoner in a business robbery committed in Odendaalsrus. He has been in detention since 2021 for the business robbery.

Lt Col Mahlatsi arrested and charged the suspect with the murder of the late Mr Regal and the suspect appeared on the said charge in the Welkom Magistrate Court today. The case against Khulekani Kaizer Mthethwa (45) was postponed till 2 June 2023 for bail application.

Suspect of farm murder arrested, firearms and suspected stolen bakkie and another car recovered

NELSPRUIT – A 36-year-old male suspect has been arrested at Spring Valley in Witbank in connection with a farm murder that occurred on 15 January 2023 at a certain farm in Badfontein near Lydenburg around 06h30 am. The members also managed to recover a white Toyota Hilux 2.4 bakkie and a 9 mm pistol with ammunition in possession of the suspect.

According to the information, it is said that Mr Jacobus Jacoba Nortjie (53) was about to go to work when he was approached by two armed male suspects who allegedly shot him. They then allegedly went inside the house and found the farmer’s wife whom they allegedly assaulted then tied her using some ropes on both the legs and hands. The suspects are said to have also took car keys for the said bakkie. It is further reported that the suspects robbed the victims of their mobile phones as well as some bank cards. Thereafter the suspects are said to have fled the scene with the stolen items. The Police at Lydenburg as well as the paramedics were informed about the incident and upon arrival the man was unfortunately certified dead at the scene. A case of farm murder with an additional charge of house robbery.

After the case was registered, an investigation was immediately conducted which led to information being obtained regarding the whereabouts of one of the suspects in Witbank. Members from K9 Unit in Lydenburg followed the details and upon arrival near a certain house in Spring Valley in Witbank. They began searching for the suspects then suddenly two suspects driving in the alleged robbed bakkie reportedly drove passed the said members. It is further reported that the members then gave chase with intent to apprehend them. It is said the bakkie stopped and the two suspects jumped out and ran on foot but the members got off their vehicles and were chasing them on foot. Each suspect was followed by members who tactically divided amongst themselves into two group. One of the suspects went and hide behind a shack and when one of the members approached him, the suspect tried to get hold of the firearm from the said member. A crew member saw the struggle between the two.

The suspect was shot and wounded on his left upper leg.

The arrested suspect could be charged for the Lydenburg farm murder and robbery as the probe continues. The second suspect evaded the arrest meanwhile a Toyota Hilux GD 6 suspected to have been stolen during the farm murder and robbery was recovered, as well as a 9mm pistol serial and some ammunition were also recovered.

After the arrest was made good citizens from Spring Valley informed the police in Witbank today, Tuesday 17 January 2023 that the arrested suspect allegedly dumped a Honda CRV vehicle and ran off. The vehicle was also confiscated and pretty investigation indicates that the vehicle was stolen during an armed robbery in October 2023 at Lydenburg. A rifle with its serial numbers filled off was also recovered by the members of the police at a certain house where the second suspect resides. The investigation continues with the hope to arrest him.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has welcomed the success made and emphasized that the members all over the province are geared up to deal with crime more especially as the year has begun.

Life imprisonment for Normandien farm murderers

DURBAN – On 15 November 2022, the Madadeni High Court convicted and sentenced two men for charges of murder, robbery and burglary that occurred at Normandien on 30 August 2020. Doctor Ngwenya (20) and Sibongiseni Masondo (33) were arrested for the murder of Roy (63) and Vida Rafferty (60) at their farm.

On 30 August 2020, Normandien police were called to a murder scene where the couple was shot and killed by the same persons who also killed the family dog before they fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. A case of murder was opened for investigation. The investigation led to the arrest of four men who were linked to this murder case. Sizwe Tell Zwane (29) pleaded guilty during March 2022 and he was sentence to 60 years imprisonment.

On 22 October 2022 Siyabonga Macu (29) was murdered and a case of murder is under investigation at Dannhauser SAPS. The remaining co-accused pleaded not guilty. They made several appearances at Madadeni High Court where they were convicted and sentenced to two life imprisonment for two counts of murder and 15 years for each count of robbery and a further six years each for burglary.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner applauds dedicated team for tracking down suspect allegedly responsible for farm murder

POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has applauded a team of Investigators for working tirelessly around the clock and successfully tracking down and arresting one of the suspects yesterday on Saturday, 08 October 2022. This after an incident of a house robbery on a farm at Roedtan in which a farmer was killed and properties robbed on Friday night, 07 October 2022.

Five men driving in a white Toyota Corolla with unknown registration numbers, arrived on the farm, Derde Kraal under Roedtan policing area in the Waterburg District at about 18:00 on Friday under the pretext that they were coming to buy milk.

They found a friend of the victim who was forcibly taken into the farm house and guarded by one of the suspects. Afterwards, the farm owner, in the company of his girlfriend, unknowingly arrived at the premises coming from the local town and were unexpectedly accosted by the remaining four suspects who pointed them with firearms.

The suspects tied his girlfriend and the friend with cable ties and started demanding money from the farm owner. They then hit him on the head with an iron pipe, forcing him to hand over the safe keys. They then allegedly disarmed him of his firearm and shot him dead. Thereafter, the suspects took firearms including a rifle from the safe, cellphones, a Laptop and other valuables before fleeing the scene in a white Toyota Corolla. The deceased was identified as Janse van Rensburg (36).

The Provincial Commissioner ordered that a team of Investigators be assembled to track down the suspects. The tactical intelligence-driven operation was conducted and white Toyota Corolla matching the description of the one that was used by the suspects during the farm attack, was spotted at Moletji under Seshego policing area. The vehicle was searched and the members found two 9mm pistol magazines, thirty (30) live rounds of ammunition and 9mm double magazines. The suspect was immediately arrested. The team is currently tracking down the remaining four suspects.

Nyanga detectives arrest three suspects for Browns Farm murder

Nyanga detectives assigned to Ben Tuzee’s murder, the victim who was lured to Browns Farm after a television set was advertised on a social media platform last Tuesday, 6 September 2022, arrested three suspects yesterday in connection with his murder. The victim aged 51 and his niece were requested by a potential buyer to make the delivery at Msenge Street at around 09:45. Upon their arrival at the agreed location, the victim and his niece came under attack by three suspects, who fled with his vehicle after he sustained a fatal stab wound. Tuzee’s nice survived the incident and was unharmed, while the stolen vehicle was later recovered not far from the crime scene.

The thorough investigation into the circumstances of this violent crime led detectives to the three suspects aged 23, 18 and 16, who are due to make a court appearance in Athlone once they have been charged with murder and hijacking.

Ben Tuzee’s murder is not regarded an isolated incident as we are aware of more incidents where victims who made use of social media platforms to advertise items fell victim after they were requested to make the delivery to areas in Nyanga such as Browns Farm and Crossroads. It is on this basis that SAPS would like to issue a stern warning to the public that they must avoid making a delivery to an area that is unfamiliar to them, especially one with higher levels of crime.

We have reason to believe that criminals use their interest in an advertised item on social media platforms such as Market Place as a decoy to perpetrate a robbery or other serious and violent crime, by luring their victim to come to them. This modus operandi must be avoided by rather meeting the potential buyer at a public place which is regarded safe and familiar to the seller. Vigilance could prevent you from becoming a criminal’s next victim.

SAPS Olifantshoek launch manhunt for suspects following a farm murder

KIMBERLEY – The Olifantshoek SAPS are investigating a case of murder after an elderly female farm owner was discovered deceased on their farm approximately 15km outside of Olifantshoek on the N14 road.

Preliminary reports indicate that the discovery was made by a neighbour on Tuesday, 16 August 2022 at about 09:00 and the deceased’s body was discovered inside the house with her hands tied.

The elderly male owner was found in the veld on his farm where he managed to untie himself.

The black GWM bakkie of the owner was found abandoned approximately 2km from the farm with the help of the community and a local security company. The elderly male victim received medical treatment.

Police are on the lookout for two male suspects who allegedly fled with a cellphone of the victim and firearms from the safe.

The John Taolo Gaetsewe Acting District Commander, Brig Johnny Besnaar has activated all resources to expedite the apprehension and arrest of the suspects.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner praises team on life sentences imposed in Still Bay farm murder

WESTERN CAPE – Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, had nothing but praise for the detection and prosecution team who ensured that four men were sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of Heila Killian (62) during an attack on a farm at Still Bay. The foursome were sentenced at the Circuit High Court in George on Friday, 22 April 2022.

Investigation into the attack revealed that the owner of Gezania Nursery and three friends enjoyed themselves at a braai in the garden situated in the back of the house on 16 April 2018 at about 22:00, when they were accosted by five armed suspects, dressed in orange overalls and faces covered with balaclavas. One of the suspects randomly shot at the victims when the deceased, Heila Killian who later succumbed to her injuries, was hit. The assailants overpowered the other two victims (men) and handcuffed them. They ransacked the house and forced a safe open where they took an undisclosed amount of cash, a collection of firearms including a shotgun, two rifles and a handgun as well as a collection of hunting knives before they fled with the owner’s white Toyota Hilux bakkie.

One of the victims (the second woman) managed to escape and alerted the police.

Later the same year, police recovered the vehicle during an operation in the Cape Metropole which subsequently led to the arrest of one suspect. Intensive investigation by investigators attached to the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit led to the arrest of four more suspects during February 2019.

The five accused faced charges of murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances and possession of unlicensed firearm. Four of the accused, Sakhumzi Benya(32), Nomwabisi Maki (26), Nkosithethu Nocuza (28) and Msomi Nikani (28), were convicted and sentenced as follow:
Charge 1 : Murder – Life imprisonment
Charge 2 : Robbery aggravated – additional 15 years imprisonment
Charge 3 : Robbery aggravated – additional 15 years imprisonment
Charge 4 : Robbery aggravated – additional 15 years imprisonment
Charge 5 : Possession of firearm without a license additional 6 years imprisonment

Lt Gen Patekile said, “These convictions and lengthy incarcerations of those who threatened the safety of society, should serve as a deterrent to would-be perpetrators. They will face the full might of the law once arrested. Society is much safer with them incarcerated,” he concluded.

Police launch a manhunt for suspects after a farm murder

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has strongly condemned an incident in which a 76-year-old man was killed in a farm at Delmas in the morning of today, Sunday 20 March 2022. A manhunt for the suspects have been launched.

According to the report, it is said that at about 11h00 am, a man and his wife were in their house at a farm (Welgevonden) in Delmas when they heard the sound of a hooter at the gate.

The man then went outside to check and the wife reported that she observed six males who indicated that they were there to buy grass bales. The suspects were then reportedly informed by the man that it was Sunday and he could not help them before going back to the house. Short moments later, the old man informed his wife that he decided to assist them anyway. The suspects are said to have then allegedly strangled the old man. Thereafter four armed suspects reportedly entered the house where they demanded for cash from the man’s wife.

The woman was then reportedly tied up with strings after she indicated to their assailants that they did not have cash. The suspects are said to have then went through the house searching for money. After a while the suspects reportedly left with two cell phones.

The man’s wife, who was unaware of what has happened to her husband at the time managed to walk to the neighbour’s farm to seek help. After a search at the premises, the body of Mr Gustav Rappard (her husband) was found in the barn. Police and the medical personnel were notified about the incident. The man was unfortunately certified dead and police opened a case of farm murder hence the manhunt.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has called for the swift arrest of the suspects. “Those suspects should be hunted down and be brought to book within a short space of time. It is really a disgrace that suspects target defenceless victims and after robbing them, they shamefully murder them” commented the General.

Farm murderers found guilty

FREE STATE – The Bloemfontein High Court convicted four accused on 25 January 2022 for murder of a couple in a farm at Blouwboswes. The accused, Johannes Sekgoro known as Lollo (43), Thamsanqa Terrence Kat known as Tailer (37), Leepile Daniel Sidasi known as Small (46) and Daniel Tsekiso Seloane known as China (29) are in custody awaiting sentencing.

Between 12 and 13 July 2019, the accused entered the farm where they attacked the couple and tied them up. They ransacked the farmhouse and stole four firearms, marathon medals, old coins as well as other valuables. They brutally assaulted them and fatally shot at them. They then fled the scene in the couple’s Ford Ranger bakkie.

The incident prompted an investigation by the Bloemfontein based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team. Three days later, the accused were arrested by the team while trying to cross the border to Lesotho. Some of the stolen items were recovered.

They were charged and they have been kept in custody throughout the trial. The High Court found them guilty on charges of two counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. They will be sentenced on Friday, 28 January 2022.

Fourth accused linked to Rafferty farm murders remanded in custody

DURBAN – On Monday, 09 August 2021, Osizweni SAPS arrested a suspect that was linked to the murders of Glen (63) and Veda Refferty (60). The elderly couple was shot dead on the morning of 30 August 2020 while at their farm in Normandien near Newcastle. Sibongiseni Emmanuel Madondo (33) was charged for the murders and armed robbery. He appeared in the Newcastle Magistrates Court on 23 August 2021. He was remanded in custody until 30 August 2021.

During the arrest on Monday, 9 August 2021, the suspect was found in possession of a pistol with 32 rounds of ammunition. He appeared in the Madadeni Magistrates Court on 10 August 2021 for being in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and he was remanded in custody. He will now join his co-accused Siyabonga Macu (30) and Doctor Fikani Ngwenya (20) who are still in custody. They were arrested in October 2020 and the case against them was remanded to 17 January 2022.

Sizwe Zwane (33) pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg High Court in March this year and was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for both murders and robbery. Detectives from the Provincial Organised Crime Unit arrested Zwane on 14 February 2021. He was the third person to be arrested in connection with the farm murders.

Provincial Commissioner condemns farm murder whilst manhunt launched for suspects

NELSPRUIT – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has strongly condemned an incident in which a 63-year-old farm owner was shot and injured and a security guard, aged 52 was shot and killed. The incident occurred at Brondal Farm, in Sabie, on Monday, 02 August 2021. Suspects are said to have then fled the scene with three firearms thereafter which included two rifles and a revolver.

It is said that on the day, about three armed suspects wearing masks reportedly entered the farm house where they held the owner, his wife and daughter hostage.

Reports further indicate that a certain security company was alerted about the incident. Two security guards responded accordingly where one was shot and the other held hostage, disarmed and assaulted.

The suspects reportedly shot the owner and robbed a certain man (who was identified as a family friend) of his white Ford Ranger Club Cab bakkie. They got away with three firearms and a cellphone. The bakkie was later found abandoned about two kilometres from the farm house.

Police at Sabie as well as the medical personnel were informed about the incident. One of the security guards was certified dead at the scene, while the farm owner and the other guard were taken to hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. A farm murder case was opened with an additional charge of attempted murder and robbery. A massive manhunt has been launched and an investigation is underway.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Manamela has further ordered for the swift arrest of the suspects. “We cannot rest until all the firearms are recovered with all the suspects put behind bars where they belong. Surely someone in the community might have seen or heard something regarding the suspects that we are looking for. We are hopeful that members of the public will assist the police with information that will help us trace and arrest the suspects”, said General Manamela.

Trio due in court for alleged farm murder and possession of suspected stolen property

POTCHEFSTROOM – Three men, aged 24, 27 and 31, are expected to appear before the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 12 April 2021.

The accused’s court appearance stems from their arrest on Thursday, 8 April 2021, in Shamburg informal settlement, near Hartbeespoortdam.

On Wednesday, 7 April 2021, just after midnight on a small holding in Remhoogte, Hartbeespoortdam, the body of security officer; Samuel Maposa (41) was discovered by fellow colleagues in a ditch approximately 50 meters away from a store room in the farm yard. His lifeless body was found with multiple facial and head injuries, with his hands and feet tied up.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two storage doors were forced open and some agricultural chemicals with an estimated value of R30 000.00 were missing. Thus, cases of murder and house robbery were registered. Consequently, information was received on Thursday, 8 April 2021, about individuals selling agricultural chemicals in Shamburg informal settlement. Acting on the received information, Hartbeespoortdam Crime Prevention Unit members arrested the first suspect at 01:30 in his house in Shamburg informal settlement. Similarly, the second suspect was found and arrested in his house in Shamburg informal settlement. The long arm of the law caught up with the third suspect at his place in Tornado Section, Bapong Village near Brits.

The police seized suspected stolen property (agricultural chemicals), a Toyoya Hilux bakkie that is suspected to have been utilized during the commission of the crimes as well as blood stained clothes.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the members’ efforts in ascertaining that alleged perpetrators are brought to book and emphasised that police will continue to work hard to ensure safety in rural areas.

Acting provincial commissioner welcomes conviction and sentence in farm murder case

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Sizwe Tell Zwane @ Schaba (33), who was arrested for the murders of the Rafferty’s at their Normandien Farm on 30 August 2020. “We wish to commend the investigating officers who have been painstakingly investigating this case since August last year. They have continued to persevere and remain committed to ensuring that all the perpetrators are eventually behind bars,” he said.

Zwane, who was arrested by detectives from the Provincial Organised Crime Unit on 14 February 2021, pleaded guilty at the Pietermaritzburg High Court yesterday and was convicted accordingly. He was sentenced to ten years imprisonment on one count of robbery and received 25 years imprisonment each for both counts of murder. He will serve his sentence concurrently.

Zwane was the third person who was arrested for the murders. His two co-accused who were arrested on 15 October 2020, remain in custody as their trial is still pending. Detectives have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests being affected in connection with the murders.

Two farm murderers sentenced to life plus 68 years imprisonment

Pretoria: The management of the South African Police Service has welcomed the sentence imposed on two men accused of committing a house robbery and other crimes in Kameeldrift, north east of Pretoria.

On 18 September 2019, the High Court in Pretoria sentenced Dolphy Sambok (45) and Karabo Semake (27) to life imprisonment and a combined 68 years in prison for, among others, murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

On the fateful day of 26 June 2016, Dolphy and Karabo together with the third accused Andrew “Steve” Thabo (48), who died in prison early in 2018, broke into the house of a couple both aged 51 where they committed armed robbery with aggravating circumstances. The couple were subjected to serious bodily injuries before being shot and left for dead when the accused fled the scene with their personal belongings.

The wife unfortunately succumbed to her injuries while the husband was taken to hospital for medical attention.

The case was registered and allocated to a National Detectives Organised Crime investigator who used his expertise to follow all the leads as the accused were not known at that stage. The detective eventually made a breakthrough when he traced one of the suspects to Brits in North West, together with the SAPS Brits detectives.

Sambok was eventually arrested on 4 April 2017 and found with the firearms that was used to shoot at the Kameeldrift couple. The following day Semake was also arrested in the Rustenburg area while Thabo was traced and found in prison.

During the trial, the investigator managed to successfully oppose bail against the duo on several occasions. The investigating officer fostered a good working relationship with the surviving victim to an extent that he ensured that he accompanied the victim to every court appearance. The widowed victim had only praise for the investigating officer when he thanked him for a job well done and for finally bringing him closure with the conviction and subsequent sentencing.

This lengthy sentence is expected to serve as a deterrent and reaffirmation of the commitment of the criminal justice system in curbing violent crimes perpetrated against rural communities.

With the reviewed Rural Safety Strategy expected to be fully implemented in due course, the SAPS and all role players intend to continue with the integrated and multidisciplinary approach which includes the mobilisation

of the rural communities in creating a safe and secure environment, conducive for food security, the reduction of serious and violent crime and the prevention of stock theft, as well as social and economic stability.

Farm murder suspect to appear in court tomorrow

EASTERN CAPE – A 21-year-old suspect linked to the murder of a 76-year-old farm owner is set to appear in the Maclear Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Cebo Andile Mgabashe is accused to have participated in the murder of Louis Petrus van der Berg, attempted murder of his wife Veronica van der Berg as well the theft of a firearm, undisclosed amount of cash and cell phones.

It is alleged that on 26 October 2016, five men visited the van der Berg’s farm in Maclear under the pretence that they were looking for their missing cow. They were met by two farm workers who introduced them to the farm owner.

Suddenly an argument erupted between the group of men and the 76-year-old. He was allegedly attacked with knives and a blunt object which led to his untimely death. The group turned their attention to his wife, fortunately, she survived the attack.

The suspects fled which led to a serious manhunt by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation team. Last week Wednesday the team made their first breakthrough with the arrest of Mgabashe in Qumbu. The four other alleged suspects are still at large. Investigation are continuing.

Police looking for farm murder suspects

NELSPRUIT – Members of the South African Police Service at Sheepmoor, near Piet Retief are looking for unknown men who brutally killed a 66-year-old man from the farm, Waaihoek. Information at police disposal, revealed that the farmer, was last seen on Saturday, 08 June 2019, and was reported by a relative as missing, on Tuesday 11 June 2019.

A search was conducted and his body was found in the plantation, not far from his residence. A preliminary probe suggested that was struck repeatedly with a sharp object. It also appears that his firearm is also missing from his house as well as his two employees believed to be from the Kingdom of Eswatini, whose identities are yet to be established.

No arrest has been made as yet, however a woman has been taken in for questioning.

Fifth suspect arrested in farm murder and rape case: Kimberley

The Northern Cape Trio crime unit are investigating a farm murder and rape after an elderly couple was badly assaulted and robbed on their farm just outside Kimberley. The incident allegedly took place during the evening of 23 January 2018. The farm owner (86) was in a coma after the incident and later died in hospital. The female victim also laid a charge of rape.

The fifth male suspect (32) was arrested by the SAPS Flying Squad early this morning, 19 February 2019, at a house in Donkerhoek, Kimberley. A firearm was also confiscated by the police. The suspects should be appearing in Court soon. The investigation continues.

Arrest of suspects possibly linked to the Still Bay farm murder

The arrest of suspects possibly linked to the Still Bay farm murder shows that police is making progress in the investigation.

On Friday, 20 April 2018 at about 17:00, the Mitchell’s Plain police caught four men busy stripping a vehicle in the backyard of a premises in 2nd Avenue, Tafelsig. Two of the suspects managed to evade arrest by running away. Members caught two suspects in a white Nissan with registration CEY 22919. The suspects are detained at Mitchell’s Plain SAPS for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police also confiscated a silver Nissan Maxim with registration CFN 162L which was in the yard. This vehicle is suspected to have been stolen. The suspects are believed to be linked to the Still Bay farm murder and robbery which occurred earlier.

Allegedly the victim had been killed at a braai with friends, when unknown suspects entered the premises and shot the victim. During the incident the suspects made off with two rifles, one shotgun and a handgun, as well as a white Toyota Hilux LDV. Further investigation by police led to the arrest of all four suspects.

The suspects, aged 24, 25, 26 and 40 respectively, face a charge of possession of a hijacked vehicle. The case is being investigated by the Provincial Detective Unit.

Six nabbed on allegations of farm murder and house robbery

NELSPRUIT – Police left no stone unturned by working tirelessly around the clock in search for suspects who carried out a house robbery and murder at a farm in Charl Cilliers, near Secunda. The hard work led to the arrest of six suspects aged 35 and 39, including a woman. The suspects were traced and nabbed at their different hideouts in Embalenhle and Emzinoni respectively after police acted swiftly on information received regarding their whereabouts.

According to information at police disposal, on Friday night, 16 February 2018, at approximately 22:30, a 73 year old elderly man, together with his family were watching TV when suddenly three armed men stormed into their house through the door. They demanded keys to the safe and took the elderly man to the bedroom where the safe was mounted and in the process, they shot the victim.

The suspects then opened the safe, took three firearms, a .287 magnum revolver, a .306 hunting rifle a .303 rifle as well as other items such as jewellery, a TV set and an undisclosed amount of cash. They then fled the scene using the family’s white Ford Ranger which was parked outside. They reportedly shot and killed two dogs which were in the house before fleeing.

The matter was then brought to the attention of the police who in turn launched a manhunt hence the arrest. During the arrest, the five men were found in possession of some of the items that were robbed from the victims including a TV set, hand guns, a rifle and ammunition at Embalenhle while the woman was found at Emzinoni in possession of the cellphone of the victim. The vehicle of the family that was used by the suspects to flee the scene was found burnt also at Emzinoni.

The suspects are due to appear at the Evander Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 20 February 2018, and are facing charges of murder, house robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of stolen property.

The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, applauded the community for their patriotic behaviour by assisting the police.

Police launch manhunt on the Lephalale farm murder suspects

The Police in Lephalale have launched a massive manhunt for a group of armed suspects involved in a farm murder which occured last night.

It is alleged that on the 20-09-2017 at about 20:00 Dr Werner Emslie aged 55 was sitting outside his house on his farm at Afguns when four unknown men, two armed with pistols (hand guns) attacked and shot him to death and further shot his 55 year old wife Maritte Emslie who is also a Doctor. She survived the attack with serious injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

During this incident ,the suspects took two hand guns(pistols) and drove away with Dr Emslie’s white new Toyota double cub bakkie with registration number DTR 758 L. The vehicle was later found abandoned 2 km away from this house.

Hawks welcome double life sentences for farm murderer

LIMPOPO- Limpopo Hawks Provincial Head Major General Thobeka Jozi has hailed the two life sentences that were imposed to Gibson Banda (38) by Thohoyandou High Court on 2 May 2017.

In November 2010, Banda who was employed as a farm worker at 16 Castle farm in Musina shot and killed the farm owner Mr Johan Greyvensteyn (54) and his wife Mrs Ann Jesle Greyvensteyn (52) at their farm.

The decomposed bodies of the two were found locked in their car under the railway line bridge near Kamukos farm by a passer-by who alerted the police. Preliminary investigations revealed that both deceased were having gunshot wounds on the head.

Investigations led the team to the suspect’s home country (where) where he was arrested and extradited to South Africa with the assistance of Interpol.

During the arrest, the police recovered the properties which were stolen during the farm attack and the firearm which was used to commit crime.

The suspect appeared several times in the Thohoyandou High Court and Pretoria High Court during his trial until he was convicted and sentenced by the Thohoyandou High Court on 2 May 2017. Banda was sentenced as follows:

Count 1 Murder- life imprisonment
Count 2 Murder- life imprisonment
Count 3 Robbery with Aggravating Circumstances- 15 years imprisonment
Count 4 Unlawful Possession of a Firearm- 3 years imprisonment and
Count 5 Unlawful Possession of Ammunition- 3 years imprisonment.
General Jozi further commended all units that were involved to make sure that justice is well served in this case. “We believe that these sentences will send a strong message to all criminals that crime does not pay. We want to thank all those involved, the SAPS, NPA and the entire Justice system for making sure that the family of the deceased get closure from horrific incident they sadly endured”. She added.

Suspects arrested for farm murders

MPUMALANGA – Four suspects have been arrested after four people; a man, his wife and both his parents, were found murdered at their farm house in Balfour on Tuesday.

Members of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, members of the K9 unit, SANEB, Visible Policing members and the Local Criminal Record Centre officers responded to a farm attack incident which was reported in the area. When they arrived they found four bodies lying dead with bullet wounds.

Investigation ensued swiftly and two suspects were arrested at a nearby town for being in possession of two laptops which belonged to the victims. While continuing with the investigations, the officers spotted a vehicle which also belonged to one of the deceased. Two men were spotted getting into the vehicle and when the police introduced themselves a shootout ensued.

The suspects were overpowered and it was later established that one of them sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and is currently in hospital.

Two Suspects, aged 20 and 30 years, will appear before the Balfour Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 February 2017, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen properties.

Two other suspects, aged 26 and 36 years, will be in the dock on Thursday, 16 February 2017 and they will face four counts of murder, illegal possession of firearm and possession of suspected stolen vehicle.

The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza expressed his sadness on the incident but was quick to applaud the officers for a swift arrest. He said the investigation must leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is served accordingly.

“These are ugly scenes and perpetrators have no place in our society. Farm attacks are one of our priorities and we will dig very deep to establish the motive of the killings and ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime receive the harshest punishment”, Lieutenant General Ntlemeza added.

Six arrested for Ixopo farm murder

Today 7 February 2016 at about 04:00, the Ixopo police were called to a scene where a farmer (67) was brutally murdered. It is alleged that the victim’s body was found lying on his chest with two open wounds on his abdomen when police arrived at the scene. Through the intensive investigation by the members of the Ixopo detectives, Kokstad K9 unit and Magma Security six suspects aged between 14 and 24 were apprehended. They were found in possession of the victims two bicycles, Plasma TV, computer, laptop, cellphones and other belongings. Charges of murder and house robbery are being investigated by Ixopo SAPS. They will appear in the Ixopo Magistrates’ Court soon.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the Ixopo police for their quick response and their investigation that led to the swift arrest of the murder suspects. “I strongly condemn the attack that led to the killing of an elderly defenceless farmer who was senselessly killed,” she said.

Police Captain in the dock for farm murder

Pretoria– He was called to crime scene where farm owners in Parys, Free State were allegedly severely assaulting two suspects whom they accused of assaulting and attempting to rob a fellow farm worker. Instead of rescuing the victims, police officer allegedly joined in and helped the farmers to beat the suspected men. Samuel Tjexa (35) and Seun Tangasha (29) later died at hospital.

Captain Hendrick Jacobus Prinsloo (46), whose involvement in the matter was raised by an eye witness, was positively identified during an identification parade and has already appeared before the Parys Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

He was released on R5 000 bail and will be in the dock again on Friday where he will join Stephanus Johannes Jakobus Cilliers (34), Anton Loggerberg (49), Johannes Mocke Cilliers (61) and Gert Boeta van der Westhuizen (46) who also face two counts of murder.

The four had accused the two deceased men of entering the Farm Biesiebult in Parys, which is owned by Lodewikus van der Westhuizen, pointing a firearm at him and demanding R20 000. It is alleged that van der Westhuizen was hit on the forehead and arm with a firearm but managed to wrestle with the attackers, got inside the house and pressed a panic button.

Fellow farm owners came to his rescue and a search for the alleged attackers ensued until the farmers found Tjexa and Tangasha 8km away from van der Westhuizen’s farm. The two were subsequently beaten and left for the dead.

Two farm murder accused sentenced to life imprisonment each

Sterling investigation by a Hartbeesfontein Detective led to the life imprisonment of Papiki Motabogi (27) and Maiuane Paulino Romao (44) by the North West High Court sitting in Potchefstroom on Thursday, 05 October 2015. The two accused were sentence to life imprisonment each for the murder of Ronel Van Ek. The 49-year-old victim was killed on her farm at Hartbeesfontein in August 2012. Before her death, she was opening her gate when she was approached by the two accused. They stole her hand bag with an undisclosed amount of money, two cell phones and a hand gun.

Motabogi and Romao attempted to steal the victim’s vehicle but the police found the vehicle abandoned along the road. The Hartbeesfontein detectives spent sleepless nights investigating and following leads that assisted in cracking the case. On 19 August 2014, Motabogi was arrested at Wolmaransstad for another case that he committed and police managed to link him to the Hartbeesfontein farm murder. The second accused, Ramao, a Mozambiquan National, fled to Gauteng after the Hartbeesfontein murder. He was arrested on 15 December 2014. They were both charged with murder and robbery.

Motabogi was given a life sentence for murder and 15 years for robbery. Romao was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years for robbery, four years for Possession of a unlicensed firearm and a year for Possession of unlicensed ammunition. All the years will run concurrently. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Tsumane welcomed the sentencing. He said the sentence will send a clear message to the criminals that criminals have no place to hide in this Province. “We have no doubt that the sentence will send a clear message that police will deal effectively with those who commit crime” said Major General Tsumane. He further commended the team of dedicated members who made it possible to secure the conviction. “We commend all members who dedicated their time to ensure that the sentence is secured against the merciless accused. Together with other role players, we will continue to ensure that those who transgress the law are dealt with accordingly”, said Acting North West Provincial Commissioner Major General Tsumane.

Two police added on Stella farm murder case

Potchefstroom- Today, two Stella police constables, Mazibuko and Nkele, appeared in the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court for Assault and Defeating the ends of justice related to killing of Moses Mosepele, 45, in Soutpansfontein farm near Stella. The incident happened on Tuesday, 27 October 2015, between 11:00 – 23:00. The two police officers allegedly joined a farmer, his wife and friends in assaulting Mosepele and his two friends after they were called to arrest them. The assaulted victims were accused by a farmer for stealing his live stock.

The two police members were arrested during the past weekend after preliminary investigations implicated them. The deceased’s family also complained about the police conduct. They were remanded in custody until Wednesday 04 November 2015 when they will join their co-accused.

Their co-accused, a 48-year-old Stella farmer, his wife and five other suspects appeared in the Vryburg Magistrates Court for murder, two counts of attempted murder, assault and kidnapping on Friday, 30 October 2015 and were remanded in custody until Wednesday, 04 November 2015.

The farmer, Mr Tigwinita Luwantu, his wife, Lindiwe Mpathani,39, their friends, Moipolai Mmastoki, 54, Lehula Kedibone, 37, Simphiwe Cele, 31, David Plaatjie, 43, and Thatafalo Kibane,18, allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and killed a man and seriously wounded other two men.

The three men were accused of stealing live stock from Tigwinita’s farm in Soutpansfontein near Stella. Ten suspects were arrested on Wednesday, 28 October 2015 following this incident. Three were later released. Of the three released, one could not be positively linked while two are minors aged 14 and 16 respectively.

The group allegedly assaulted three men with knobkerries and poured them with hot water. It is alleged that the three were walking at the veld looking for wood when they were caught by the group.

One of the three victims died from the injuries while the other two are still recovering at a local hospital.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner in the North West, Major General Jacob Tsumane raise a concern in the manner that the police allegedly failed to do their primary function. “We can’t be associated with criminal activities while we are crime fighters. Were our members are found to be involved in wrong doing, they will take the responsibility” said the Acting Provincial commissioner.

Police welsome life sentence for farm murderers

Potchefstroom: Today, the Acting Provincial Commissionet of the North West, Major General Jacob Tsumane welcomed the 60 years combined sentence handed down again two farm murderers.

The sentence was imposed yesterday, Wednesday, 24 June 2015 by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Samuel Mabena and Bismack Dick attacked the Oberholzer elderly couple in their farm in Brits on 5 September 2012. During the attack, a 63-year-old Mauritz was shot and killed by the two while his 60-year-old wife survived the gruesome assault. The two stole a safe containing two revolvers and a rifle which they abandoned 20km away after breaking it.

Dick was arrested on 17 September 2012 and Mabena on 27 September 2012. During Dick’s arrest, he was found in possession of the deceased’s rifle. Investigations revealed that Mabena was also involved in a murder of a well-known boxer Corrie Sanderes. Sanders was shot and killed during an Armed Robbery in Brits, on 22 September 2012.

The two will be serving their sentence each as follows:

Count 1: 5 years for House Breaking with intent to rob.

Count 2: 15 years for Robbery with aggravating circumstance.

Count 3: Life imprisonment for Murder.

Count 4: 5 years for illegal possession of ammunition

Count 5: 5 years for Illegal possession of firearm

The Acting Provincial Commissioner applauded the investigating team for the sleepless nights and long hours of work they invested in this case. “Well done” said Major General Tsumane.” I hope this sentence will bring solace to the affected families” added the Acting Provincial Commissioner.

Suspect arrested for farm murder

Yesterday, Hluhluwe police arrested a 29-year-old suspect for the murder of Peter Terrence Rizzato (62). It is alleged that last month six unknown males who were armed with firearms attacked and kidnapped employees of the farm before they proceeded to the room where they shot and killed Rizzato. A substantial amount of cash and cellphones were taken from the farm employees before men sped off with the deceased’s vehicle. Police were alerted and attended to the gruesome scene where they found Rizzato in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds to the chest. A case of murder and house robbery was opened at the Hluhluwe police station for investigation. Following a round the clock investigation one of the six suspects was arrested and will be charged for murder and robbery. He will appear at the Hluhluwe Magistrates Court on 17 March 2015.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Hluhluwe police for the breakthrough. “We are confident that the five remaining suspects will be arrested soon and we will ensure that they face the full might of law”, she said.

Spokesperson for KWANALU security, Koos Marais conveyed words of condolences to the family of the deceased. “We commend the professional conduct of the police. They were compassionate and respectful towards all the victims of this heinous crime and carried out their duties above and beyond our expectations”, he said.

Farm murder suspects arrested at Mpumalanga

Three suspects aged 27 and 52 were arrested last night at Mpumalanga province by Newcastle Task Team. They were found in possession of a revolver which was taken during the killing of a couple in their farmhouse at Groenvlei area outside Paulpietersburg. They will appear in the Utrecht Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 September 2014 facing two counts of murder and house robbery. A couple were at their farmhouse on their farm, when they were attacked by the suspects. They were killed before the suspects fled the scene.

“This is a breakthrough made by our committed and dedicated members who worked tirelessly tracing these suspects. We will work around the clock to establish if they are not linked to any other house robberies committed in and around the province,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

The Hawks team in the Northern Cape secures a 76-year sentence against a 17-year old farm murderer

Pretoria – 14 August 2014. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) in the Northern Cape yesterday secured a 76-year sentence against a 17-year-old boy for murdering the Steenkamp family on their farm in Griekwastad. The Northern Cape High Court in Kimberley handed down the sentence.

The boy who committed these heinous crimes cannot be identified as he is underage. He fatally shot 44-year-old Deon Steenkamp, his wife, 43-year-old Christel, and their 14-year-old daughter, Marthella. The court sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment for each murder, 12 years’ imprisonment for raping Marthella and four years’ imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice.

He approached the police after his gruesome attack on the Steenkamp family. He alleged to be a victim of a farm attack, which the police proved to be a lie. He committed the crime himself. “The boy has committed a serious offence and this sentence is a good recipe for him and those who have no respect for the rule of law,” said Lieutenant General Anwa Dramat, the National Head of the Hawks.

Farm murder suspects arrested

The hard work and determination by Himeville SAPS members paid off when they arrested three wanted suspects at Nkwezela area, Bulwer for murdering an Underberg farm owner. On 17 October 2013 the deceased Dan Knight (56) was at his home with his wife when the suspects appeared out from nowhere and attacked them. They tied the victim’s feet, hands, mouth and was also assaulted him. The suspects also locked his wife in the toilet.

The wife managed to escape unharmed through the window and later reported the matter to her neighbours who alerted the police. By the time police and neigbours went back to the house the suspects were already gone and the Dan Knight was assaulted to death. The suspects took two vehicles, Toyota Land Cruiser, Isuzu Bakkie, cell phone, three shot guns before they fled the scene. Through investigation the members were able to locate the whereabouts of the suspects and yesterday, 20 October 2013 they processed to Bulwer where they found the suspects at their homes in possession of items stolen during the murder and robbery and were arrested.

The arrested suspects aged 22 and 32 were charged with murder, robbery, possession of firearms and ammunition and will appear tomorrow, 22 October in the Himeville Magistrates Court. The KwaZulu Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members of Himeville for the speedy arrest of the suspects and the recovery of stolen goods.

Two arrested for Sunnyside Farm murder in Ixopo

A 61-year-old Eugene van der Merwe and his son Siyanda Ndlovu (13) were the victims of an alleged farm attack on Wednesday, 9 October. The father was killed while the critically wounded son was rushed off to hospital after being attended to by paramedics at the scene. Two men were subsequently arrested for the attack on the farm and are due to appear in the Ixopo Magistrates’ Court today, Monday, 14 October.

Members of the Ixopo SAPS responded to a complaint of an attack on Sunnyside Farm in Ixopo on Thursday where they interviewed the farm owner who pointed out Mr van der Merwe’s body lying in the farm shed. Van der Merwe’s son Siyanda, survived the attack. Both father and son had been severely beaten up and sustained multiple bodily and head injuries, apparently with a blunt object. The father was attacked in the shed where his body was found while the son was attacked in the house. The motive for the attack is yet to be established and the murder weapon has not been recovered at this stage. The deceased’s body was taken to the Ixopo State Mortuary where a post mortem would be conducted. It is believed that the father and son, who live on the farm, were attacked on Wednesday evening at approximately 19:00. A farm worker who made the shocking discovery at about 05:00 on Thursday morning, alerted the farm owner who has another farm in the same locality. The farmer in turn, contacted the SAPS.

Members of the Ixopo SAPS Detective Service and Visible Policing unit teamed up to locate and arrest the suspects who were believed to be in the Lufafa Ward precincts. The first suspect was arrested on Thursday while the second was arrested on Friday. One of the arrested men is a former employee.

Jan Kempdorp farm murder and robbery accused sentence in High Court

NOTHERN CAPE – The Northern Cape High Court recently sentenced two males to 18 years’ for murder and five years’ for robbery of a 60-year-old Jan Kempdorp farmer.

The incident happened on the plot of Renier Adrian Jooste (60) during January 2018 near Jan Kempdorp.

Jooste was severely assaulted and his naked body with a stab wound in the chest was discovered by an employee.

The accused fled with valuables including bankcards, cell phones, electrical tools and alcoholic beverages of the deceased.

The SAPS Provincial Organized Crime with the assistance of the K9 unit and the SAPS Crime Scene Management centre followed up on information and arrested three males on a chicken farm near Jan Kempdorp.

The police also recovered most of the stolen goods that was robbed from the deceased.

The suspects were sentenced as follows on 22 May 2025;

Accused 1: Lucky Bohelo (26) was acquitted of all charges.

Accused 2: Kernels Persent (23) and accused 3 Maxim Hutama(24) were both sentenced to 18 years’ for murder and five years’ for robbery. The sentences will run concurrently.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended Detective Warrant Officer Patrick Dibebe and his team from Provincial Organized Crime Investigations for their meticulous investigation that led to the outstanding contact crime conviction.

Western Cape welcomes the conviction and sentencing of Bonnievale four

Following the conviction and sentencing of four suspects for the 2019 brutal murder of farmer Tool Wessels and the attempted murder of his wife on their farm in Bonnievale, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Ivan Meyer said, “This guilty verdict and sentencing takes us a step closer to ensuring justice for Tool Wessels, his family and the farming community of Bonnievale.”

The four Lesotho nationals who murdered Wessels were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Western Cape High Court in October 2023.

Ntabanyane John Tlali, Thabiso Nomoro Ramollo, Moeketsi Max Hlaudi, and Keketso Thabang Matsabisa were seasonal workers on Jurrie Wessel’s, 55, Kapteindrift farm at the time of the murder in May of 2019.

“The guilty verdict and lengthy sentences imposed by Judge Dereck Wille of the Circuit High Court sends a strong message that attacks on our rural communities will never be tolerated. I am still however devastated by this loss of life and my heart still hurts for Tool, his family and loved ones. An attack on anyone in our agricultural sector is an attack on our rural economy.” continued Minister Meyer.

In addition to being found guilty of murder and attempted murder, the accused were found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the unlawful possession of two firearms and ammunition.

The four suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, ten years for attempted murder, fifteen years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and five years for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

In addition, the four were sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for contravening the Immigration Act.

“I commend the relevant law enforcement and judicial officers for ensuring that those who committed this crime are held accountable. No matter where it occurs or against whom it is committed, crime is unacceptable in our communities. This also demonstrates that criminals will have no place to hide here in the Western Cape. The law will catch up with them. Our efforts to make the lives of criminals uncomfortable within the confines of the law will not cease,” commented Minister Meyer.

“This is indeed welcoming news and I commend the court for its finding and sentencing. The investigators should also be applauded for their sterling work and for ensuring that these convicted criminals do not get away with this heinous crime. Regardless of who you are or where you come from, lawlessness will not be tolerated in our province. As the Western Cape Government, we have a clear goal and that is to halve the murder rate by 2029. We want both our urban and rural residents to feel safe,” said provincial Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety Reagen Allen.

“I once again send my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those we have lost including Tool Wessels’ friends and family. The Western Cape Government will continue to work to ensure farming and rural communities are protected and treated with the dignity they deserve. Where a crime has occurred, the guilty must be punished and face the full might of the law,” concluded Minister Meyer.

Man sentenced to 20 years for brutal attack on award-winning Free State farmer

The Regional Court in Winnie Mandela, formerly Brandfort, sentenced 35-year-old Moeketsi Mphatlatsa to 20 years of direct imprisonment for his role in a vicious farm attack on award-winning farmer, Mimie Jacobs.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the harrowing incident took place in February 2020, when Mphatlatsa and two accomplices forcibly entered Jacobs’ farmhouse at night.

“They kicked down her door, tied her hands and feet with wire, and stabbed her multiple times, leaving her with serious neurological injuries. During the ordeal, the assailants informed her that they knew she lived alone, suggesting a premeditated and calculated assault,” said Senokoatsane

Displaying extraordinary courage, Jacobs managed to walk seven kilometres, despite her injuries, to seek help at a neighbouring farm, an act described as a testament to her resilience.

Delivering his sentencing argument, Regional Court Prosecutor Puseletso Ali described the crime as “merciless and orchestrated,” highlighting its brutality and intent.

The court convicted Mphatlatsa on several charges, including housebreaking with intent to rob, kidnapping, and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The sentences, 15 years for robbery, five years for kidnapping, and 10 years for assault, were partly ordered to run concurrently, resulting in an effective 20-year prison term.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the sentence, calling it a victory for justice and rural safety.

“These types of violent, organised attacks undermine safety, dignity, and social cohesion, particularly in isolated rural settings,” said Senokoatsane.

“This sentence sends a clear message: The law will not be lenient with perpetrators who violate the peace and security of our communities. The NPA remains committed to securing convictions and imposing appropriate punishments that deter future crimes.”
