The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality can confirm that a fire occurred on the 17th floor of the Lillian Diedericks Building in the Central area of Gqeberha on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.
The fire was discovered shortly before midday and was attended to by the Municipal Fire and Emergency Services. All occupants of the building were immediately evacuated and safely accounted for.
A preliminary assessment indicates that the fire originated from an air conditioning unit, which overheated and ignited surrounding materials.
One firefighter sustained smoke inhalation during containment operations. He received medical attention from EMS personnel and was transported to hospital for further observation.
The affected area sustained fire, smoke and heat damage. The preliminary damage assessment is estimated at between R150 000 and R250 000, subject to confirmation following a detailed assessment.
The building remains subject to the necessary safety assessments before normal access is permitted. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
