Employers please stop and consider the real reasons why your employees came to work today after heavy rains and predictions of more accompanied by high winds. This morning in Nelson Mandela Bay roads were closed due to flooding, substations were tripping like junkies in a cocaine mine and people were mopping out their homes.
And yet, employees still reported for work.
There are a number of reasons why they did so and we, as employers. all hope that it is because we have provided our employees with enough guideance, care and a decent living wage to enable them to escape most of the ravages of last night coupled with a real love for their work.
On the other side of the coin maybe today is the day to have a real heart to heart with employees and find out the real reason why they reported for work.
God forbid that they did so because they were afraid of being censured, questioned or belittled over a ‘little bit of rain’!
Nothing demonstrates the difference between employer (have) and employee (have not) more than their individual reactions to a disaster.
Employers will see a disaster as an opportunity for growth whilst employees mostly have a narrow view around the protection of kith and kin.
Toxic Culture
As alluded to – today is the day to put your management style to the test and find out why your employees really came to work.
If your workplace is characterised by high turnover, low morale, and persistent stress caused by harmful behaviors. If your employees use words like these to describe your workplace: hostile, volatile, micromanaged, disengaged, unethical, fear, poor communication, cutthroat competition, lack of trust, burnout and employee disengagement then your culture is toxic to the core and your employees didn’t come to work because thay love you (or their work) but rather because thay are deathly afraid of you (or their direct report).
