The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) wishes to alert residents to a scam currently making rounds where residents receive an email to pay their account into a visual that is a replica of municipal notices in which banking details having been altered/replaced by scammers.
The NMBM statements are sent from voiceivr@mandelametro.gov.za and no other email address.
To spot a fake notice: look out for the excessive white border which makes the visual look like it’s still in draft format. The wording still has a curser even though the ad is complete. The word ‘Metropolitan’ is used – the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is the official name of the municipality, the word ‘arrears‘ is incorrectly spelled as ‘arreas‘.
Stay alert and verify all information on the NMBM’s platforms or by calling the NMBM call centre and press option 1 for Municipal Account Queries. You may also pay at the customer care centres, using your Municipal app or by means of a debit order.
