Can the world’s energy needs be fully supplied by renewables?
IN the video below, Guy Sella – CEO and Founder of SolarEdge, talks about the amount of solar power hitting the earth – in one hour more energy from the sun hits the earth’s surface than what the wrld consume sin one year – and the amont of land needed to harvest that solar energy to power the earth’s entire needs.
Hint – it is smaller than you think!
SolarEdge’s grid services offer aggregative control and data reporting enabling the pooling of PV and storage in the cloud for the creation of virtual power plants. Offering benefits to all stakeholders, the solution will provide utilities with the tools to leverage distributed energy generation systems to more efficiently meet demand. Energy retailers will enjoy protection from price peaks and PV system owners can increase their revenue from joining this new energy economy.
Sella says; “To produce the amount of energy mankind uses in one year all we would need is to cover a land mass measuring 160 by 320 kilometres in the Mojave Desert with Solar Panels.”
Decentralized power generation and distribution is becoming more and more feasible with mega battery storage , off grid and hybrid solar systems, and the prospect of running your home off of your electrical vehicle battery. Battery technology is set to hit the magical $100 per kilowatt hour manufactured cost in 2019 and halve within 5 years after that making power storage and the use thereof cheaper than fossil fuel power as from petrol, diesel (in the case of vehicles) and coal and nuclear (in the case of energy utilities).

Alan’s ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; “I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
