During a recent visit by the Department of Transport to the Eastern Cape, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) urged the Department to address the terrible condition of several key main and rural roads in the province.
Oversight visits and discussions with local farmers and residents revealed that roads such as the MR470 between Kirkwood and the Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha harbour should not only be graded, but urgently need widening and levelling as well.
The same applies to the R102 between Gamtoos and Jeffreys Bay – a route critically important for the economy, community and tourism.
The condition of the R75 between Despatch and Gqeberha is particularly concerning. Pedestrians, including children and patients from the Dora Nginza Provincial Hospital, risk their lives every day seeing as there are no safe crossings.
The Freedom Front Plus requested that pedestrian overpasses be constructed in areas such as Zwede and Missionvale, where the traffic lights of eight busy intersections are not working. This road is aptly known as the “Road of Death”.
The party also called for the widening of the R334 near Rocklands and Kwa Nobuhle to address high traffic volumes and safety risks.
These routes are strategically vital for transporting agricultural products and exports via the harbour. Deteriorating infrastructure seriously jeopardise safety, economic development and quality of life in the region.
The Freedom Front Plus will do everything in its power to improve service delivery, and ensure road safety and sustainable infrastructure development in the Eastern Cape.
