The Daily Maverick’s, Pieter-Louis Myburgh spearheaded an investigation into the IDT’s R836-million oxygen plants debacle which led the team deeper into the IDT and its CEO’s affairs.
The IDT’s spokesperson got in touch with Pieter-Louis saying that he had “very sensitive” business to discuss. A first meeting ensued, one in which promises of tenders and cash payments dominated the conversation. The spokesperson, Phasha Makgolane, set up another meeting to seal the deal. Makgolane’s boss, Tebogo Malaka, availed herself for this second gathering at a Stellenbosch restaurant in broad daylight.
It was here that Pieter-Louis Myburgh was offered R60 000 in cash with the promise of much more on a monthly basis should he cease exposing the rot.
The Question No-One is Asking:
If our politicians and people in power are so brazen in offering bribes I just wonder how many other investigations by lesser journalists have been bought off for even less than R60 000.00?
After all it has become normal to bribe traffic officials with a KFC, a cooldrink, a R200 note so surely such practices above that pay-grade are rife?
