Responding to the publication of international and South African research surveys which show that radio remains the most trusted medium for news, Algoa FM has revamped its news department and entered into strategic partnerships.
“As a commitment to Algoa Country’s audience, we have entered into a number of credible partnerships to enhance news content and keep our listeners informed as well as entertained,” says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.
Algoa FM’s broadcast footprint is from the Garden Route to the Wild Coast and inland through the Karoo, as well as an international online following.
Recent initiatives include sharing agreements with the Daily Maverick and Baywatch, its Nelson Mandela Bay Bureau.
Algoa FM has introduced a “Top of Mind” podcast series with the Baywatch Bureau, which casts a spotlight on the facts behind the headlines, and the news that shapes our world, both on air, and online.
“The Baywatch newsletter has gained immense popularity for its hyper-local, investigative focus on Nelson Mandela Bay.
“Meanwhile, Algoa FM has earned a reputation built over the past 40 years for trusted news coverage.
“Together, we’re aiming to hold local power structures accountable, simultaneously building strong, community-driven news resources. With the 2026 Municipal Election around the corner, there exists no better time to collaborate on facts, fairness, accuracy, and context.
“To benefit business and consumers alike, Algoa FM remains committed to supporting economic growth and sustainability in our footprint,” adds Jay.
“A recent media partnership with NAMPO Cape, demonstrates the success of an agreement with Farmer’s Weekly – a premier, agricultural publication that has served the agribusiness community with trusted news, technical advice, and in-depth analysis for more than a hundred years.
“This collaboration resulted in “Agri Focus,” a dedicated Page on our website which provides local, regional, and national agricultural news as well as information, both on air, and online.
“Algoa FM just recently secured an exciting content-share agreement with the Agricultural Business Chamber’s Chief Economist, Wandile Sihlobo, a senior research fellow of the Department of Agricultural Economics at Stellenbosch University, and the Presidential Envoy on Agriculture and Land.
“All of these agreements dovetail into our existing relationships with Moneyweb, the Citizen, Group Editors, and Agence France Presse.
“Algoa FM also has well established news-sharing arrangements with other independent radio newsrooms such as OFM, East Coast Radio, Jacaranda 942, Kaya FM, and Heart FM, which further bolster our national news coverage” he adds.
Managing Algoa FM’s editorial policy and deciding on the relevance of the stories at our disposal, is a dynamic news team headed by veteran News Editor, Shadley Nash.
“Our journalists are getting out more, meeting the newsmakers, and reporting live from developing stories.
“Ultimately, we report the facts, fairly, accurately, and within context, all the while serving the interests of nation-building and a better life for all – and at Algoa FM – we’d rather be right than first!” says Nash.
