Johannesburg, South Africa – Electricity Expo Africa, a groundbreaking event set to take place at the Nasrec Expo Centre from 9-11 September 2025, was officially launched at the prestigious ECA(SA) Presidential Excellence Awards on Friday, November 22, 2024. This landmark event, organized by the Electrical Contractors Association (SA) and the South African Equity Workers Association (SAEWA), will bring together industry leaders, innovators, and key stakeholders to address Africa’s energy challenges with sustainable, safe, and cutting-edge solutions.
SAEWA and the ECA(SA) are the sole partners behind the National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industries in South Africa (NBCEI), a model of successful cooperation spanning more than five decades. These two organizations have worked together to establish one of the country’s most effective and influential bargaining councils. Now, they are applying the same spirit of collaboration to Electricity Expo Africa, where they are committed to delivering an event that will reshape the future of the electrical industry.
The Expo will serve as a dynamic platform for installers, suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and regulators to converge, collaborate, and share innovative solutions to address Africa’s energy crisis. The expo will highlight the latest advancements in electrical technologies, renewable energy solutions, and smart grid innovations. About Electrical Contractors Association (SA)
The ECA(SA) is the leading association for electrical contractors in South Africa, representing the industry since 1948. With around 4,000 members, employing 75% of the electrical contracting workforce, it plays a key role in advocating for the sector. South African Equity Workers Association (SAEWA)
Founded in 1929 as the South African Electrical Workers Association (SAEWA), the union initially operated under the Electrical Workers Association of the UK. By 1937, it was formally registered and expanded to Johannesburg, Durban, and the Highveld goldfields. SAEWA became a key trade union for electrical workers, gaining official recognition with the Chamber of Mines and helping establish industrial councils like the MEIBC and NBCEI in the 1940s and 50s.
The 1956 Labour Relations Act restricted workers’ rights, especially for Black workers, but the 1979 Wiehahn Commission recommended allowing all workers to join unions, which led to the formation of COSATU and supported South Africa’s democratic transition in 1994.

National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industries (NBCEI)
SAEWA and the ECA(SA) are the sole parties behind the NBCEI in South Africa, a powerful example of what can be achieved through decades of collaboration. For over fifty years, these two organizations have worked together to establish the most effective Bargaining Council in the country. Now, they are bringing that same spirit of cooperation to the upcoming Electricity Expo Africa, where SAEWA, the ECA(SA), and the Bargaining Council are united in delivering a groundbreaking event for the electrical industry. The current leadership Robert McAlpine, General Secretary of SAEWA, and Mark Mfikoe, National Director of the ECA(SA) have a long history of collaboration, having first joined forces in 1997 to resolve a labor dispute.
