Yokhuselo Haven has certainly been getting the attention and support that they need this August. Yokhuselo offers shelter for abused women and children in our fair city.
Through my association with the Built Environment Ladies Association (BELA) I have been privileged to be part contributor to three August Women’s Month events geared to give Yokhuselo as much support as possible for the good work that they do.
ONE: The first event was a Potjiekos Cooking Competition with a a little bit of what we used to call “Old Man’s Marbles” at the Mill Park Bowling Club. Young Nicholas and I entered a Vegan Curry Potjie – Team One and a Half Men – in the 2 August 2025 fundraiser and were very pleased when our potjie came out tops – I think we will now retire after our first and only ever win!
You will know that I am not afraid to boast so here goes with the Judges Comments:
- Healthy and Exotic – I will be back for more!

- Perfectly Cooked.
- An absolute treat!
- An excellent addition to a perfect potjie!
- Over the top – Love it!
- Best vegetarian Potjie ever!

Our thanks to the Potjiekos Competition Judges: Grace Duckworth Du Preez (from Fat Cats Catering) and Olga Williams.
TWO: And then on 7 August the BELA event proved to be a cracker – not only for Yokhusela but also for the association and sponsors. Held at the House of Fire and Illusion Glass Showroom on 6th Ave. Walmer the event was oversubscribed and Yokhuselo walked away with a substantial cash donation, along with two van loads of essentials for the women and children.
THREE: The Voice of Courage Fashion Show, covered by one of my former MyPR interns – Dolly Shabalala – was a cracker too for the Haven. This is an annual event full of glitz and glamour which is always a welcome antidote to the pain and abuse experienced by the woman who enter Yokhuselo, often with JUST the clothes on their backs.

BTW: Yokhuselo are hosting a High Tea on Saturday 30 August 2025 at 14h00. The Mary Geldenhuys Church on Elk Street, Gelvandale is the host.
Cost: R100 pp

And the point: It is not unheard of to have some fun whilst helping people!
