The Municipality’s water system remains under severe pressure following recent heavy rainfall and flooding, which continue to impact water treatment operations and reservoir recovery across the Metro.
High turbidity levels (muddy raw water) at several Water Treatment Works have significantly reduced production capacity, placing strain on the bulk water supply network and affecting reservoir storage levels. While some improvement has been recorded at Churchill and Loerie Water Treatment Works, the Nooitgedagt Water Treatment Works continues to experience major operational challenges due to elevated silt loads and difficult site access conditions.
As a result, several reservoirs remain critically low, leading to low water pressure and intermittent water supply in a number of areas across the Metro.
Ongoing interventions include:
- Continuous operational adjustments at treatment plants
- Increased chemical dosing to maintain safe drinking water standards
- Additional water tankers being deployed to affected communities
- Technical teams working around the clock to stabilise the system
The Municipality anticipates that full system recovery and stabilisation may take more than two weeks as infrastructure and reservoir levels gradually recover.
Residents are urged to continue using water sparingly to help reduce pressure on the system while recovery efforts continue.
