GQEBERHA – Swift action by Motherwell SAPS members responding to a house robbery in progress resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect and the recovery of a firearm, while a vehicle allegedly used in two house robberies was also confiscated.
On Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at about 11:00, Motherwell SAPS members responded to a house robbery in progress in Mzwazwa Street, NU7, Motherwell. The complainant reported that three-armed suspects had entered the residence and demanded cellphones and money before fleeing in a purple Volkswagen Polo with a sunroof.
While police were attending to the complaint, the members received information that another house robbery was in progress in Sigangala Street, NU4B. As the members approached the second address, they spotted a purple Volkswagen Polo matching the description provided by the first complainant. Three suspects emerged from the residence and fled on foot. Police pursued the suspects, managing to apprehend one of them. A Taurus revolver and ammunition were recovered in his possession.
The arrested suspect was positively identified by the first complainant as one of the suspects who had robbed her and pointed a firearm at her. The purple Volkswagen Polo was also identified as the vehicle allegedly used during the first robbery. During the second house robbery, the suspects allegedly threatened the complainant and her daughter with firearms and took R230 in cash. The swift police response prevented the suspects from escaping with further property.
The suspect is facing charges of house robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in court soon.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, commended the members for their swift response, determination and coordination in linking the two incidents.
“The prompt response by our members demonstrates the importance of police visibility and immediate action when crimes are reported. We will continue to pursue those who prey on our communities and ensure that illegal firearms are removed from the hands of criminals,” said Brigadier Ngalo.
