The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is urging residents to remain vigilant and take simple precautionary measures to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading mpox, while encouraging anyone who develops symptoms associated with the virus to seek medical advice promptly.
Mpox is a viral illness that can cause a rash, skin lesions, fever, headaches, muscle aches, unusual tiredness and swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms may vary from person to person, and early recognition is important in ensuring that affected individuals receive appropriate medical care and help prevent further transmission.
Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, has called on residents to remain informed, act responsibly and avoid unnecessary fear or stigma. “We encourage residents to remain calm, informed and vigilant. Awareness and early action are important in protecting ourselves, our families and our communities. If you notice an unusual rash, unexplained sores or other symptoms associated with mpox, please do not ignore them. Seek medical advice as soon as possible so that you can receive the appropriate guidance and care,” said Mayor Lobishe.
The Municipality advises residents to look out for the following possible symptoms:
- A new or unexplained rash, spots, blisters or sores, including on the face, mouth, hands, feet or genital area.
- Fever, headache, muscle aches, backache or unusual tiredness.
- Swollen lymph nodes, particularly around the neck, armpits or groin.
- Painful or itchy skin lesions that may develop into scabs.
Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions to help reduce the risk of infection:
- Avoid close skin-to-skin contact with anyone who has an unexplained rash or sores.
- Avoid direct contact with lesions, scabs or bodily fluids of a person suspected of having mpox.
- Do not share towels, clothing, bedding, razors or other personal items that may have come into contact with affected skin.
- Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use an appropriate hand sanitiser, particularly after physical contact with others.
- Keep affected areas clean and avoid touching or scratching skin lesions.
Mayor Lobishe further emphasised the importance of taking responsible action when symptoms appear. “Experiencing these symptoms does not automatically mean that a person has mpox, as other conditions may cause similar signs. However, it is important not to self-diagnose or delay seeking medical attention. Anyone who develops these symptoms should limit close contact with others, seek medical advice promptly and inform the healthcare professional about their symptoms and any possible exposure,” she said.
The Municipality encourages residents to approach suspected cases with compassion and respect, avoiding speculation, discrimination or the stigmatisation of affected individuals.
By staying informed, practising good hygiene, recognising possible symptoms and seeking medical advice early, residents can play an important role in protecting themselves and the wider community.
