Over a period of 54 hours of an extended Power Outage THIS Summerstrand home only experienced 4 hours and 47 minutes without power – if the sun had shone on Monday then the time without electrical power would have been ZERO minutes.
With the recent power outage woes being experienced by Summerstrand, Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay residents for an an extended length of time due to vandalism of an ancient oil filled 132 KvA cable, along with an extended overcast and rainy period we pulled out some real time data from a recent Solar installation installation done by Straton Solar.
The site has the following installed:
- Tesla 14 kWh Powerwall
- 6 kW Solar Edge Inverter
- 20 x 365w Tier 1 Solar Panels
- 20 x Solar Edge Optimisers
The installation is on a prepaid meter (awaiting a four quadrant meter installation) so is NOT pushing back into the grid, yet.
The normal maximum amount of discharge for this installation was initially set at 60%.

The mains power dropped out on 7 November 2021 at around 08:00
The mains power came on at 21:55 on 8 November and dropped at 23:59 on the same night.
The mains power came on at 13:56 on 9 November.
On 7 November in the space of 4 hours the Solar Panels charged the Tesla Powerwall to a 98.3% capacity from 42.3% capacity.
The picture on Monday with the rainy and overcast conditions was poor as the Solar Panels struggled to charge the Powerwall.
On Tuesday the picture changed dramatically with a typically sunny day and the Powerwall was charged to 98.9% capacity off of a base of 9.75% over a period of 6 hours.
The rate of charge by the Solar Edge Inverter is 5kW whilst the rate of charge from Mains power is 1.7 kW.
This particular installation is a very power hungry one and in order to mitigate the 4.6 hours that the installation had with NO POWER on the early morning of 9 November from 03:12 to 07:59 (mainly due to the inclement weather on Monday) the client would have to reduce consumption or install one more Powerwall.
