Today, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Chief Operating Officer, Nompumelelo Mrubata (Manager: Monitoring and Evaluation) together with the Public Health Directorate (Waste Management), Security Services, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and Facilities Management, conducted a joint operation at the Govan Mbeki Taxi Rank.
The primary objective of the operation was to address the illegal occupation of public toilets by vagrants at the taxi rank. These individuals were found unlawfully using municipal water and occupying public facilities intended for general public use. Tools and personal belongings were discovered inside the toilets. They were instructed to vacate and remove their belongings.
Unemployed individuals and those living on the streets were referred to social workers for support and assistance, including access to shelters and social services.
The Waste Management division remains committed to inspecting all public toilets across the municipality to ensure they are properly maintained and accessible to the public.
