The Digital Dome (also known as the Digital Planetarium) at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Ocean Sciences Campus is the centerpiece of the university’s award-winning Science and Knowledge Centre in Gqeberha.
As the most sophisticated facility of its kind in South Africa, it is designed to move beyond traditional astronomy to act as a “3D laboratory” for complex data visualization and public engagement.
The 15-meter diameter dome functions similarly to an IMAX theater but with a 360-degree fully immersive environment.
The facility features high-resolution (8K) 3D digital projection, allowing for hyper-realistic simulations via an immersive 8K Projection.
While it offers traditional astronomy and stargazing shows, its primary focus is on “immersive worlds.” This includes 3D tours of life underwater, simulations of marine ecosystems, and visual models of outer space.
The dome recently became the home of the Future Talent Centre, a collaboration with Odin (Jendamark Automation). It uses the immersive space to demystify Artificial Intelligence (AI), featuring interactive robotics, computer vision, and AI-driven learning tools like the “Omang” study buddy.
The dome auditorium seats approximately 138 to 150 people.
The building includes a 100-seater interactive teaching laboratory with flexible desks, a 60-seater digital space for smaller presentations, and an exhibition area for hands-on science displays.
The center aims to “democratize science,” offering regular public shows, school group tours, and career development expos (like the AIDC-EC Career Expo).
The Science Centre is located on Gomery Road, Summerstrand (opposite the North Campus).
Approximately 30% of the center’s activities are public-facing “Dome Shows.”
While general admission to the center is often free for certain community events, immersive Dome Shows typically incur a fee (ranging from roughly R40 for children/students to R70 for adults) to support technical maintenance.
The facility also houses the University Shop and a coffee shop that opens onto a public plaza.
