The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has asked the acting City Manager of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM), Mr Ted Pillay, to immediately address the illegal electricity connections in Kragga Kamma Road.
This street, which runs through various residential neighbourhoods in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), is a hotspot for illegal electricity connections. These connections form a web of power lines from power boxes along Kragga Kamma Street, over roads and fences, into homes.
The connections are not only illegal, but also pose a serious safety risk to residents and cause significant financial losses for the NMBM.
The Freedom Front Plus demands that the City Manager launch a comprehensive investigation, remove all illegal electricity connections, and take stringent action against offenders.
Ultimately, loyal taxpayers bear the brunt of electricity theft as they have to pay higher power tariffs and endure outages caused by overloading
The Freedom Front Plus will also raise the issue at the next council meeting and will continue to apply pressure until the problem is effectively addressed.
