The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) successfully passed a motion in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Council (NMBM) to hold individuals damaging traffic lights personally liable for the damage.
This motion aims to shift the financial burden of repairing and replacing traffic lights from taxpayers to the guilty parties and their insurance companies.
The NMBM has recently seen an increase in damage to traffic lights, mainly caused by vehicular accidents where drivers were either negligent or under the influence of alcohol.
The party’s motion stipulates that the cost of repairing or replacing damaged traffic infrastructure should be recovered from the responsible drivers, their next of kin or their estate as well as their insurance company, where applicable.
The acting City Manager, Mr Ted Pillay, also endorsed the recommendations of the motion.
It has been confirmed in writing that the current control measures will be reviewed and, where necessary, additional systems will be implemented to better protect traffic infrastructure.
In addition, an investigation was launched to determine whether the recent increase in damage to traffic lights may be due to deliberate sabotage.
The Freedom Front Plus wants to highlight that this step clearly shows that the NMBM administration is taking the principles of accountability and cost recovery seriously.
This is a significant victory for NMBM residents, and demonstrates that one of the Freedom Front Plus’s top priorities is to protect taxpayers against needless expenses.
The party will keep fulfilling its oversight role to ensure the measures are effectively implemented and enforced, and that the Metro’s infrastructure and public funds are safeguarded.
Freedom Front Plus Political Position: It is a right-wing political party.
