Following the Level 6 warning issued by the South African Weather Service, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Disaster Management Centre has activated a high-alert mode to ensure efficient coordination, preparedness, and rapid response measures.
The Municipality has already implemented early warning systems to key stakeholders and role-players, including Focal Points, NMBM Advisory Forum members, Ward Councillors, and the Provincial Disaster Management Centre. Twenty-four-hour close monitoring will be conducted in flood-prone areas, informed by various risk factors, including historical incidents and known vulnerable zones.
Ward Councillors have also been roped in to strengthen communication efforts at community level, ensuring that residents are alerted timeously, with particular focus on vulnerable households and communities. All Disaster Management Centre officials have been placed on standby, while public safety interventions, including the activation of shelters and other emergency support mechanisms, have been arranged to minimise risks to lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Public Coordination meetings with various stakeholders are currently underway from today, 04 May 2026, to ensure operational readiness and effective response.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Disaster Management Centre continues to monitor the situation closely and urges residents to remain vigilant, follow official safety advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas.
