Lying close to Greenacres, Adcockvale, Fernglen and Perridgevale, the upper middle class suburb of Newton Park is ideally placed for easy access to beaches, St George’s Park Cricket Stadium and Cape Road CBD.
It’s essentially a residential suburb with at least three schools in amongst its tree-lined avenues. If that does not paint a clear enough picture then mention Third Avenue dip to anyone and they’ll know exactly where Newton Park is. Third Avenue dip occurs where Newton Park crosses through the Baakens Valley along Third Avenue. Before the building of the William Moffat Express way this used to be the major access between Walmer and Newton Park. Built in 1957 it’s still popular as a short cut to Mangold Park, Lorraine and Walmer.
Stop at the low water bridge – the hazard of this dip is that it can occasionally flood, and as a result closes for periods – and you’ll see a plaque in memory of David Baillie Lovemore, who pioneered this road.
