The ANC/EFF coalition in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) has plunged the Metro into crisis with its constant failure to maintain critical infrastructure.
What is currently unfolding in the Metro is not an unexpected disaster, but the inevitable outcome of years of incompetence, maladministration and political indifference.
The most notable evidence of this decay is the electricity crisis. Three power pylons recently collapsed on key 132 kV lines that are essential for stabilising the Metro’s electricity supply.
The extent of the damage warrants large-scale repairs, but the Municipality refuses to accept accountability.
The consequences include widespread supply interruptions, economic losses and a growing sense of insecurity.
The current water crisis is exacerbating the situation. The five main dams serving the Metro and surrounding areas have collectively dropped to below 40%.
While the ongoing drought plays a role, the problem is rooted in extensive water leaks and a complete lack of maintenance on the water system. Millions of litres of water is lost while residents are deprived of a basic necessity of life.
The Municipality, which is failing to do routine and essential maintenance, is solely to blame.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) repeatedly pointed out the decay of both the power and water infrastructure, but the ANC coalition and the city administration have simply ignored its warnings.
Meanwhile, businesses are suffering major financial losses, food supplies are spoiling and residents’ daily lives are being severely disrupted. Families are stranded without electricity, security and basic services, while municipal leadership is missing in action.
Residents deserve better. Change is no longer just an option – it is absolutely crucial.
