The amalgamation of Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), Uitenhage (now Kariega), and Despatch resulted in the creation of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in 2000.
Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Despatch and Walmer were all towns in their own right with their own City Councils and Mayors.
The ”’Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay”’, officially the ”’Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality”’, is the head of the local government of South Africa’s Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, established in 2000.
