Mark Dawson, NSRI Gqeberha station commander, said: At 20h36, Tuesday, 8 September, NSRI Gqeberha duty crew were activated following a request for medical assistance made to NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) from a local Chokka fishing boat reporting a local adult male fisherman onboard suffering a medical complaint.
EC Government Health EMS had been activated and were responding to the Port of Port Elizabeth where the fishing vessel was expecting to dock.
NSRI Gqeberha crew responded to assist EMS at the Port of Port Elizabeth. It was determined that the fishing vessel was nearing Port at the time.
On arrival on the scene the fishing vessel docked and NSRI medical crew boarded the vessel where medical treatment was commenced.
NSRI were joined on the scene by EMS paramedics.
The patient was stabilised and he was transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition where he is recovering in the care of doctors and nurses.
The patient is expected to male a full recovery.
