At the advent of the fibre network rollout our streets and pavements were riddled with work gangs digging up our roads and pavements in order to lay cables.
I think that our Municipality, by allowing this to happen and not taking control of the situation, have created a monster AND lost out on a bucket load of recurring revenue.
Stop and think about all the service delivery items travelling along and under our feet:
- Fibre
- Electricity
- Water
- Telephone etc.
IF the municipality took a holistic approach and refused to allow people to dig up our roads but rather use a Municipal supplied infrastructure then deployment, maintenance and servicing of these cables and piping would be quicker, easier, cheaper and good for ratepayers.
Imagine a single underground set of piping (like a stormwater pipe that you can walk or crawl) through that will accommodate all the above and allow contractors to easily pull their cable or piping through.
The municipality, in turn, could rent this facility to contractors, taking back ownership of our common property and actually making a few cents in the process!
