Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Constituency Services, in collaboration with the Department of Sport, Recreation, and Culture, is currently at Kenako Shopping Centre, encouraging residents to take part in the Human Rights Commemoration event at Derrick Ferreira Stadium, Kariega, on Friday, 21 March 2025.
While the Sharpeville Massacre is widely known, it was not the only tragedy of that day. On 21 March 1985, in Langa, Kariega, Eastern Cape, police opened fire on protesters marching against the same unjust pass laws, killing at least 35 people and injuring 27 others. The Langa Massacre serves as a powerful reminder of the nationwide resistance against oppression.
Residents are encouraged to visit their nearest ward councillor’s office to register for transport to and from the stadium.
This year’s theme, “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights,” calls on us to honour the sacrifices of those who fought against oppression while actively working towards a more inclusive society.
