The original cross of the 150 year old St Peter’s church has been returned to its rightful place at the church ruins at St Peter’s Rainbow Village.
This marks the restoration of a symbol that once stood at the heart of South End’s spiritual and community life. Safeguarded by St Marks and St John’s Church, the cross has now been reinstated through a partnership with the MBDA. In recognition of this act of custodianship, the MBDA committed to providing a new cross for the Church, ensuring that both sites are respected and honoured.
The return of the cross forms part of the MBDA’s heritage restoration programme in the Baakens node.
The church community, made up largely of former South End residents, has been central to this initiative. Broader community engagement will take place through upcoming activities at St Peter’s Rainbow Village, designed to reconnect people with the site’s history and significance.
VISITOR INFORMATION:
St Peter’s Rainbow Village, at 6 Gardner Circle in South End, is open to the public throughout the holiday season, between the hours of 08h30 and 19h30 in the evening. Entrance is free of charge, and visitors can enjoy views of the harbour, Bay and CBD from the deck and walkways that make their way across the historic site.
