Simon Williams, NSRI Gqeberha deputy station commander, said: At 18h35, Saturday, 25 July, our NSRI rescue craft Bay Guardian was launched, accompanied by MEX (Maritime Extrication) crew and an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, for a maritime medical evacuation operation of a 27 year old Filipino male seafarer suffering a medical condition onboard a bulk carrier motor vessel in Algoa Bay.
We rendezvoused with the motor vessel 9 nautical miles offshore of the Port of Port Elizabeth where 2 NSRI MEX crew and the EMS rescue paramedic were transferred onboard the vessel.
The patient, in a stable condition, in a challenging technical high angle extrication operation, was transferred onto our rescue craft followed by the rescue crew.
In the care of the EMS paramedic the patient was brought to our NSRI Gqeberha station 6 rescue base and transported to hospital by EMS ambulance, in a stable condition.
The patient is recovering in hospital in the care of doctors and nurses.
The operation was completed at 21h54.
