A great part of the decision to buy an electric vehicle centers around range anxiety and how to interpret the various figures quoted by manufacturers.
Internal Combustion Engined (ICE) cars are measured according to miles per gallon or kilometres per litre – we never ask what the size the fuel tank is though!
Electric Vehicles (EV’s) are quoted with a total expected range. This doesn’t really give a level playing field for an efficiency comparison.
The move is towards quoting range figures for EV’s as kilometres per kilowatt hour, with a battery size quoted.
The list below is updated to reflect the real efficiency of EV’s via a km/kWh figure and the numbers are sourced from official figures as published by the manufacturers themselves or agencies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
