After a recent garage clear-out (number one gazillion in my lifetime!) I was stuck with a number of old electronic items and unable to dispose of them in the normal rubbish black bags.
WHY?
Since 2021, it has been illegal in South Africa to dispose of electronic waste in general trash.
So I loaded them into the bakkie fully intending to drop them off an an e-waste facility in Walker Drive whenever I got the chance.
Then I met Romeo Topkin who had been getting rid of E-Waste at the offices of Straton Electrical.
The deal with Romeo from Easy E-Waste is simple – he takes your stuff away, sells it on and gives you half the value of what he received. To my mind even receiving a hundred bucks is better than taking the time and effort to drive to a recycling center and give the items away.
Anyway – Romeo is very likeable and true to his word. He carted away quite a few items and promptly returned the next day with our share, in cash.

Easy E-Waste began its journey in Johannesburg, focused on collecting ewaste from government Model C schools in the southern region of the city. In 2023, Easy E-Waste relocated to Gqeberha, initially targeting Model C schools in the Northern Areas. The responsible recycling of e-waste from institutions such as Triomp Primary, Helenvale Primary, St. Thomas High, and many others were met with overwhelming success.
Recognizing the need for a more sustainable and scalable source of e-waste, Easy EWaste pivoted its focus to commercial clientele in June 2024.
