A slight change of theme for the next Know Your Bay, which will take place Tuesday 27 May at Bayworld.
Dr Daniel Aslanian from the Institute for Marine Research in France (IFREMER) will talk to us about our brains in his talk entitled “Your brain is lying to you”. In this interactive and vibrant talk, we will learn about how our brains are setting us traps, called cognitive biases. We will learn that the most important thing is not to find a good answer but to find the right question and that more important than the solution itself is the way to answer the question…
Dr Aslanian is a marine geologist, geodynamicist and world-renowned plate tectonics expert who has worked at Geo-Ocean (IFREMER, France) for 30 years. His research topics range from ocean ridges and passive margins to hotspots, from sedimentology to magmatism, with an emphasis on vertical movements. Recently, his studies have led him to develop close international collaborations with evolutionary biologists, paleontologists, phylogeneticists, physical (paleo)-oceanographers, paleoclimatologists and astrophysicists. His scientific career has also led him to take an interest in epistemology and cognitive biases.
The event is free and open to all. From 17:30 for 18:00 until 19:00.
In the following Know Your Bay on 27 June, Dr Gary Koekemoer will answer the question “what can we do in Nelson Mandela Bay about climate change”, and present the Climate Resilience Framework for NMB – a joint project by the Presidential Climate Commission and Wilderness Foundation Africa.
