The next Know Your Bay will take place Monday 24 March at Bayworld. Claire Browning from the Iziko Museums will take us, in her talk entitled “Oceans of Time” on a journey through deep time as we uncover South Africa’s rich marine fossil heritage and the ancient oceans that once covered this land. From stromatolite reefs to vast oceans teeming with marine reptiles, to hidden marine invertebrate fossils in the Cape Mountains, we’ll discover how shifting climates, ice ages, and mass extinctions have shaped life beneath the waves.
Claire Browning is a geologist and museum curator specializing in palaeontology and sedimentology. Her research focusses on two major mass extinctions preserved in South Africa’s rock record in the Cape Mountains and in the Karoo Basin. She is also dedicated to making palaeontology accessible to a wider audience through museum-based education and public outreach programs.
The event is free and open to all. From 17:30 for 18:00 until 19:00.
