Nelson Mandela Bay: The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber is set to take its flagship Bay of Opportunity initiative on the road this April, with a strategic engagement in Johannesburg aimed at positioning Nelson Mandela Bay as a prime investment destination while deepening trade relationships with key national and international stakeholders. Coordinated by the Chamber’s Trade and Investment Desk, the Bay of Opportunity Roadshow forms part of a focused effort to actively promote the region’s competitive advantages, unlock investment opportunities and foster meaningful business-to-business connections that can translate into long-term economic growth.
As part of the week-long roadshow, the Chamber will host the Bay of Opportunity Business Reception that will bring together a diverse mix of over 80 companies from Europe, Africa, America and Japan with established offices in South Africa, alongside invited local businesses and industry leaders, creating a dynamic platform for engagement, collaboration and exchange. Attendees will gain first-hand insight into Nelson Mandela Bay’s investment, trade and sector-specific opportunities under the Bay of Opportunity initiative, while also benefiting from high-level networking opportunities designed to strengthen partnerships and open new markets.
A key feature of the programme will be a panel discussion titled Investment, Innovation and Impact: Discover the Bay of Opportunity, featuring Siyabonga Mthembu, Office Managing Partner at BDO NMB; Pieter Nienaber, RMB Sector Head for Automotive, Logistics and Industrials; Gideon Smith, Marketing Manager at S4 Integration; Isaah Mhlanga, Chief Economist at RMB; with Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen facilitating the discussion.
In addition, S4 Integration will present a showcase of its innovation capabilities, aligned to the Chamber’s Made in the Bay initiative, which showcases, celebrates, and promotes locally developed solutions with global relevance and reinforces the region’s industrial and technological strengths.
Speaking ahead of the roadshow, Denise van Huyssteen said, “The Bay of Opportunity Roadshow is about ensuring that Nelson Mandela Bay is present in the rooms where investment decisions are being shaped. We cannot afford a passive approach; we must actively engage, build relationships, and consistently communicate our value proposition to both national and international audiences.” She added, “This initiative is not only about attracting investment and employment, but about building sustained partnerships that contribute to inclusive economic growth, job creation and long-term resilience.”
Van Huyssteen further highlighted the importance of business-to-business engagement, noting, “By creating a platform where local and global businesses can interact directly, we are enabling collaboration, knowledge sharing and access to new opportunities across sectors such as automotive, logistics, manufacturing and innovation.” She continued, “These engagements are essential in strengthening our city’s position within broader value chains and in ensuring that local businesses are integrated into both national and global markets.”
She added that in an increasingly competitive and volatile global environment, metros and regions must continuously assert their relevance, stating, “The Bay of Opportunity initiative provides a cohesive and compelling narrative about the metro’s capabilities, strengths and untapped potential.” Van Huyssteen emphasised the role of the Chamber’s Trade and Investment Desk, saying, “Our Trade and Investment Desk serves as a gateway for investors by providing insights, facilitating connections, and supporting ease of doing business in the area. The roadshow is a natural extension of this work, taking the Bay’s value proposition directly to key markets.”
Adding to this, Lunga Mjodo, Strategic Initiatives Manager at the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, said, “The roadshow is a critical platform to actively showcase Nelson Mandela Bay as a globally competitive and investment-ready destination. It allows us to tell a compelling story about the Bay’s strengths, capabilities and opportunities, while directly engaging with decision-makers and influencers in key economic hubs. Initiatives like this are essential in elevating the Bay’s profile, strengthening investor confidence and ensuring that we remain top of mind in an increasingly competitive investment landscape.”
As the Chamber continues to roll out the Bay of Opportunity campaign, the Johannesburg engagement represents an important milestone in advancing the Bay’s economic agenda, strengthening its investment pipeline, and reinforcing its position as a destination of choice for investors seeking opportunity, innovation and impact.
