The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber is pleased to report that, based on feedback received from its members, no incidents of violence, intimidation or criminality affecting Chamber member businesses were reported during today’s planned nationwide protests.
While several businesses implemented precautionary measures to safeguard their employees, customers and property, operations across the metro generally continued without significant disruption. The Chamber believes that the proactive steps taken by businesses, together with the visible presence of law enforcement and the responsible conduct of all parties, contributed to a calm and orderly day.
The Chamber thanks its members for heeding the call to remain vigilant and for prioritising the safety and wellbeing of their employees while ensuring business continuity wherever possible.
We also acknowledge the efforts of the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order, as well as all stakeholders who exercised their constitutional rights peacefully and responsibly.
Today’s outcome also demonstrates what can be achieved when effective safety and security measures are visible, coordinated and consistently implemented. The Chamber would like to see this same level of policing, law enforcement presence and public safety become the norm every day, creating a stable and secure environment in which businesses can operate, residents can go about their daily lives with confidence, and investors can have greater certainty in Nelson Mandela Bay.
A stable and secure operating environment is essential for economic confidence, investment and job creation. Today’s outcome demonstrates the value of preparedness, cooperation and responsible civic conduct in protecting both constitutional rights and economic activity.
