The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality advises residents that the Metro’s water system remains under severe pressure, with reservoir storage levels still critically low and no significant recovery at this stage.
Most critical reservoirs are currently operating between 0% and 10%, resulting in ongoing low water pressure and intermittent water supply across several reservoir zones.
The current challenges are largely due to high turbidity levels in raw water following recent heavy rainfall, which continues to impact filtration processes and reduce treatment efficiency at water treatment works. High water consumption across the Metro is also placing additional strain on the already stressed system.
Areas currently affected include parts of: Rosedale, Kabah, Langa, Mountain View, McNaughton, Fairbridge Heights, Motherwell, iKamvelihle, Wells Estate, Bluewater Bay, St George’s, Walmer Township, Walmer (7th–14th Avenue), Glen Hurd, Newton Park, Schauderville, Mangold Park, Greenacres, Perridgevale, Adcockvale, Parsons Hill, Glendinningvale, Mill Park, Linkside, Mount Croix, Richmond Hill, high-lying areas of Central, Rowallan Park, Greenbushes, Bridgemeade, Hunters Retreat, Kabega Park, Parsons Ridge, Parsonsvlei, Francis Evatt Park, Morningside, Baywest, Sherwood, Lorraine, Malabar, Barcelona, Gelvandale, Walmer Heights, Greenshields Park, Fairview, Walmer Downs and KwaNobuhle.
Current interventions and operations:
- Nooitgedagt Water Treatment Plant continues operating at an increased output of 170ML per day.
- Recovery efforts within the Motherwell Zone are showing gradual improvement.
- Once Motherwell stabilises, supply will be boosted to Stanford and Chelsea.
- Loerie, Churchill and Elandskloof Water Treatment Works remain operational and continue producing water.
- Pumping at Schonnies is currently maintained at 38ML per day.
- Operational adjustments continue across the system to support recovery and optimise water management.
The Municipality continues to closely monitor the situation, with all technical teams working around the clock to stabilise the network and restore supply.
At this stage, full system recovery and restoration may take more than two weeks.
Residents are urged to continue using water sparingly and responsibly while recovery efforts remain underway.
