As a liberal white male South African with limited struggle credentials there are two words in common usage in South Africa that, to this day, still make me feel uneasy whenever I use them.
In fact there are even racist jokes made around them – one involving Jacob Zuma and his fire pool, lots of this particular descriptive name, a pool cleaner and Jacobs’ family swimming in the fire pool spring to mind.
We managed to change the name of the Coral Tree from it’s racist connotations and the time is now right to apply the same brutal end to these particular words…
And those words?
“Decaffeinated Coffee”
My proposal is simple we change the name to “Coffee Zero”.
