16 Lower Valley Road, also known as the Tramways Building, is a historic industrial landmark located in the Baakens Valley of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa. Originally constructed at the end of the 19th century as a transport hub, it has been repurposed in the 21st century as a multipurpose center for commerce, technology, and community events.
History
The building was designed by G.W. Smith and completed in 1897 for the Port Elizabeth Electric Tramway Company. It originally functioned as a power station and a tramcar house for the city’s electric tram system, which launched its first tram from this site in the year of its opening.
Over the following century, the building underwent various changes in use:
- Transport Hub: It served as a terminus for both horse-drawn and electric trams, and later as a municipal bus shed.
- Entertainment: For a period, the facility was utilized as an ice rink.
- Dereliction and Restoration: After being abandoned and falling into a state of dereliction, the building was restored in 2015 by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). The restoration aimed to revitalize the Baakens Valley as a “green lung” and creative hub for the city.
Architecture
The building is a prominent example of Late Victorian Industrial architecture. Its design is characterized by large, open-span halls and high ceilings, originally intended to accommodate tram maintenance and power generation equipment.
Key architectural features include:
- Exhibition Space: A vast main exhibition hall covering approximately 1,000 square meters.
- Historical Remnants: While the original powerhouse chimney from 1897 was demolished, the structure retains its industrial aesthetic, which has been preserved and integrated with modern office and event facilities.
- Venue Versatility: The building includes three distinct event spaces, a 16-seater boardroom, and a 200-square-meter foyer designed to bring together arts, technology, and commerce.
Present Owner/Occupant
The building is currently owned and operated by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), a special-purpose development company established by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The MBDA maintains its primary offices within the building.
